APPLICATION FILED NOV. 7, 1907.
Patented Oct. 20, 1908.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KLAS OLOF SANDSTROM, OF KARLSKRONA, SWEDEN, ASSIGNOR TO EMIL NILSSON, OF HUSQVARNA, SWEDEN.
TUBE-CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 20, 1908.
Application filed November 7, 1907. Serial No. 401,123.
To all whom it may concern:
Be is known that I, KLAS OLOF SAND- s'reoM, foreman, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Karlskrona, Sweden, and whose post-ofiice address is V arfsgatan 1, Karlskrona, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tube- Cleaners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 1
This invention relates to flue cleaning devices of that class wherein brushes are employed as the cleaning elements.
This device consists of a support havinga plurality of elements or washers and rings arranged so that bristles may be folded about the rings in a manner to extend radially therefrom to form a continuous peripheral brush surface. a
A further improvement consists in corrugating the washers so that the concave and convex portions of the washers can receive and displace the bristles thereby bringing the outer ends of the bristles in close'relation.
The invention will. be more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing and will be more particularly pointed out and. ascertained in and by the appended claims:
In the drawing :Figure 1, is a side elevation, partly in section, of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is an end elevation thereof.
Like characters of reference designate similar parts throughout the different figures of the drawing.
As shown the invention consists of a shank portion, which may consist of an internally threaded cylinder 1, and which may be pivotally connected with an operating rod 2 at one end for the purpose of operating the cleaner. A support, preferably consisting of a bolt 3, is adjustably connected with the cylinder 1, and as shown is threaded at one end to engage with the threads of the cylinder 1. The bolt 3 is provided at its outer end with a head 1, adapted to form an abutting shoulder. A plurality of washers 6, are placed loosely upon the bolt 3 for the purpose of engaging the bristles, hereinafter described. The washers 6 are preferably corru gated so as to present alternate convex and 'tlonal rings,
mounted between the washers 6 and are adapted to engage the bristles. Said rings have an internal diameter greater than the diameter of the bolt so as to allow the bristles to be inserted in place and the rings and bolt are so proportioned with respect to each other that the looped portions, or rather the bites thereof are firmly held between said bolt and rings. The bristles which are indicated at 8, are folded or looped about the rings 7 and are engaged by the washers 6 which collapse said bristles and cause them to extend radially to form a peripheral brush surface.
Means are provided for holding the bristles in place and as shown said means consists of a nut 5, said nut being threaded to engage the threads of the bolt whereby the washers 6 are clamped into engagement with the bristles 8. The nut 5 upon the bolt 3, is adapted to lock the bolt to the cylinder 1, when the bolt is inserted, in the cylinder, so as to bring the cylinder 1 into engagement with the nut 5.
Should it be desired to increase or decrease the number of rings and washers, the bolt 8, is first removed from. the cylinder 1 and then the nut 5 is removed. The rings and washers are then easily removed thus allowing the removal of worn bristles. Vl hen the nut is removed from the bolt addiwashers and bristles may be added thus making it possible to increase or decrease the length of brush desired.
I claim:
1. A flue cleaner comprising in combination a threaded receiver, a threaded bolt adjustably secured to said receiver, a plurality of corrugated washers on said bolt spaced apart from each other, a plurality of rings interposed between said washers, tufts of bristles folded about said rings and extending radially therefrom, and a nut engaging said support and receiver for compressing said washers against said bristles and whereby said receiver may be locked to said suport. p 2. A flue cleaner comprising in combination, a threaded shank portion, a headed bolt provided with threads engaging said shank portion, a nut for locking said bolt in an adjusted position, a plurality of rings surrounding said bolt, bristles looped about said rings, said rings and bolt being so proportioned as to effect engagement thereby with said bristles, and corrugated washers interposed between said bristles and serving when said bolt is adjusted to collapse the looped ends thereof and cause the same to meet and form a continuous peripheral brush surface.
3. A flue cleaner comprising in combination, a shank portion, a bristle support adjustably secured thereto, a plurality of rings surrounding said support and effecting engagement of the bristles therewith, bristles looped about said rings, and corrugated washers interposed between said bristles and 1 1 l l l l serving when said support is adjusted to collapse the looped ends of the bristles and cause the same to meet and form a continuous peripheral brush surface.
t. A flue cleaner comprising in combination, a shank portion, a bristle support adj ustably secured thereto, a plurality of rings surrounding said support, bristles looped about said rings and corrugated washers interposed between said bristles and adapted to force the ends thereof together when said support is adjusted.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
