BENJAMINE E. CLEMENT, OF IIUMBOLDT, TENNESSEE.
GUN-CLEANING ROD.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMINE E. 3mm- ENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Humboldt, in the county of Gibson, State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gun-. Cleaning Rods; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gun rods, and it has articular reference to a gun cleaning rod com-' pr1s1n a body portion terminating at its ends in im ets, the object being to provide a gun ro of novel construction for the contem lated.
The etails of the invention will appear in purposes the course of the following description, in'
which reference is had to the accompanying drawin s forming a part of this specification, like 0 aracters of reference designating similar parts throughout the several Views, wherein: I I
Figure 1 is an elevation of a gun cleaning rod constructed in accordance with the resent invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged e evation showing the modified embodiment of the invention.
Referring specifically-to the accoin anying drawings, the numeral 1 designates t e body of the gun cleaning rod which at each end is reduced in diameter as at 2 andbeyond said reduced portion is convoluted to afford a gimlet 3, the gimlet 3 at its inner end being of suflicient diameter to coact with the reduced portion 2 to afford a shoulder 4, opposite to which is a shoulder 5. It is preferred to construct the gimlet 3 of varying pitches, the use of which will depend upon the circumstances. g
In the modified embodiment of the inven Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed June 12, 1907. Serial No. 378,614.
- tion illustrated inFig. 2, the gimlet end is designated by the numeral 6, and its convolutions are constructed with notches 7 having curved edges 8, and per endicular edges 9, the latter merging wit 1 the adjacent curved edge to form a biting point 10.
In use, the gimlet ends may be employed to move a lodged. ball, by drilling the same Patented April 28, 1908.
into the ball, or they may be employed to hold a wadding of cotton or lint to clean the barrel of the gun. The provision of the re duced portion 2 affords means whereby the user may twist several bights of the cotton frictionally about the rod, thereby insuring its firmer retention.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Fig. 2 this action is facilitated by the provisionof the notches 7 and the points 10, which take into the material of the cotton so that the same may be wound firmly upon the gimlet without slipping.
It is preferred to construct the reduced ortions 2 adjacent each end of square conormation and to grip 12 which is ormed to-surround either of said reducedportions in accordance with the present invention is-simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and prac tical and efficient in use.
7 What is claimed is:
A gun rod of the type set forth, comprising a body portion having its end formed with spiral convolutions affording a gimlet, and
constructed with notches cut thereinto.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
