IMPROVED TAILORS. SEAT.

TO ALL WIIOM IT' MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH NEUHAUS, of Belleville, in the county of St. Clair, ,and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Tailors Seat; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-'- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved tailors seat.
Figure 2 is a plan or top View of the same.
Similar letters/oi` reference indicate like parts.
'lhis invention relates to a new seat for tailors, which is so arranged that it will allow its occupant to assume a convenient position, and that it will not prevent the proper circulation ot' the blood.
IIeretofore, tailors at work had their choice between three very inconvenient postures. Generally they would sit with their legs crossed under them. If they sit thus for'half an hour, the circulation of .the blood in their feet will be completely stopped, lthe back and breast are allicted with pain, and the second position has to be assumed, whichv consists in sitting with the llegs stretched forward, the right leg crossed over the left leg, but this posture cannot be retained for any length of time, as the back will be bent and the br-east contracted, and circulation in the left leg will soon he stopped.
The third position is then resorted to, which consists in drawing the right'leg under the body, and in keeping the left leg strained: This position willy also soon cease to vbe comfortable, as circulation in the right leg wiil be stopped.
VFrom these defects in the seats of tailers originate their general inlir'mity, they being much more alieted with diseases, and live, on an average, not as long as mechanics in any other trade.
rIhe object of my invention is tc produce a seat in which `tailors can conveniently sit with their legs sup ported, and with their lower extremities in such position that the circulation of bloed will not be interrupted.
My invention consists in the use of a seat with a ixed or hinged back, and with an up-and-down, backwardand-forward, as well as laterally-adjustable elevated knee-support. y
A, in the drawing, represents a scat, made ot' wood or of other suitable material, upholstered or not, as may be desired. It is either supported by legs, or is altogether without them, in case it is to be put on a table.
B is a back-support; the same is either rigidly fastened to the seat, or is hinged thereto, being, in the latter case, more convenient for travellers, as it can be folded down.
On one side of the scat is formed, by means of a metal plate, a, or otherwise, an eye or loop, a, through which a rod or bar, C, is itted..
'Ihis rod C is backward and forward adjustable in the loops a, and can be clamped in any desired position by means of neet-screw, Z1, or some other equivalent device.
On the front end of the bar C is formed a vertical socket or tube, c, through which a rod D, is fitted, that is up and down adjustablein the tube, and that can be fastened in a desired position by means of aset-screw, cl, or some other equivalent device. v
I prefer to have the rod D round, so that it can be turnedin the tube c.
On the upper end of the rod D is formeda horizontal socket er eye, e, through which a bar, E, is tted that can be laterally adjusted in the eye a, and that can be clamped by means of a setscrew,f, or some other equivalent device.
On the rod E is supported a narrow cushion, F, as shown.
rIhis cushion is, owing to its aforesaid connection with the seat, backward and forward, up and down, as well as laterally adjustable, and can be cvcn turned in any desired direction, so that it can be adapted to the size and convenience ofthe occupant of the seat.
The occupant of the seat rests his back against the support B, places one leg over the cushion F, and keeps r the other leg stretched or otherwise, as he may from time to time find to be most convenient.
The garment, vor other article toy be sewed, is or maybe held on tligtt leg'wbiob rests on tbe cushion F. Thus all inconvenience is removed, and the circulation of the blood remains uninterrupted.
Halving thus described my invention, I claim es new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A tailors seat, provided with n, book, B, and an adjustable knee-support, Fsubstantally as herein shown and described.
2. The devices herein shown and described of attaching the cushion F to the seat A, said devices consisting' ofthe eye a, rods C, D, and E, all 11m-de as described, rand operating so as to allow the backward and forward,
up and down, and lateral adjustment cf tbe cushion, as set forth.
i Y FRIEDRICH NEUHAUS.

AUGUST C. IIUSILE.
