Be it known that I, JAMES B. PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammocks, of whichthe following is a specification.

One object of the present invention is to prevent the bod y of the hammock from slipping in respect to the ends of the spreader, which would cause the latter to project and become unsightly and the former in all probability to be rent and torn.

Another object of the invention is to provide for firmly attaching the body of the hammock as well as the clew-cords to the spreader.

Another object of the invention is to provide asightly, efficient, and reliable, clip or clamp for securing together the parts of the hammock.

To these and other ends hereinafter set forth the invention, stated in general terms, comprises the improvements to be presently described and finally claimed.

The nature, characteristic features, and scope of my invention will'be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which" Figure 1 is a top or plan view of a clip and a portion of a spreader embodying features of the invention with the hammock-body removed. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view, partly in section, of the same drawn to a reduced scale and showing the hammock-body in position; and Fig. 4 is a top view of the end of the hammock, illustrating means embodying features of the invention.

In the drawings, 1 is a spreader having a grooved edge 2 and a pair of recesses or depressions 3 and 4 on its top and bottom faces which can be provided by drilling holes through it.

5 1s a bifurcated clip having an eye 6 and having each branch 7 and 8 provided with an inward projection 9 and with a lateral expansion 10, having a baclnvardly-extending arm 11, arranged generally parallel with the parts 7 and 8 and terminating in a projection a or otherwise adapted to take into the recess 4. As shown, the bifurcated clip and its described parts consist of a single piece of wire bent to form the various parts described. The spreader 1 is inserted in a hem or fold of the body a of the hammock with its grooved edge 2 inward. The clip 5 is then applied on the outside of the spreader in such a way that its projections 9 and the projections :r on the ends of the parts 11 take into the depressions 3 and 4 and in such a way that the parts 10 of the two branches take into the groove 2, while the shanks of the two branches bear upon the outside edge of the spreader. In this way the body (6 is clamped substantially all around the spreader and the latter is firmly held against endwise slipping in respect to both the body a and clamp.

In Fig. 4 I have illustrated clamps or clips 5, applied only to the ends of the spreader and to the end clew-cords Z), and the intermediate clew-cords c are shown as attached to bunches of the unwoven warp ends (I; but of course the invention is in no way limited to the number of clips employed.

It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains that modilications may be made in detail without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence the invention is not limited further than the prior state of the art may require; but,

Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
