BREAKDOWN GUN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 784,193, dated March 7, 1905.
Application filed June 13, 1904. Serial No. 212,229.
To all whom it WI/ by concern:
Be it known that I. GEORGE TOBORG, of Chicago, in the State of Illinois, have invented cer-. tain new and useful Improvements in Breakdown Guns, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to breech -loading guns provided with cocking mechanism operated by the breakdown; and the object of the improvement is to simplify the cocking mechanism.
The invention consists, substantially, in a lever mechanism having a fulcrum coincident with the pivot, on which the barrel turns to open and close the breech, and a cocking-rod provided with a joint near one end and supported in a perforation of the frame through which it projects. The cocking-rod is not connected to the hammer nor with its operating-spring.
The invention is distinguished by the form and arrangement of the jointed cocking-rod relatively to the hammer and the spring for actuating the fall of the hammer, whereby the cocking-rod is disconnected from the hammer and the spring and merely impinges upon the breast of the hammer during the turning down of the barrel, and the joint of the rod operates to allow its impinging end to rise slightly with the cocking and to drop back when withdrawn from the hammer.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a doublebarrel gun of the class mentioned containing my invention, the dotted lines showing the position of the cocking-mechanism when the barrel is turned down. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary detail showing a longitudinal section of the frame on the plane of the axis of one of the barrels and showing the position of the cocking mechanism when the gun is closed. Fig. 3 is a detail showing a bottom View of a detached part.
In the drawings, A is the frame, A the detachable fore end, B the barrel, C the lock, D the hammer, E the cocking-rod, and F a disk. The end of the frame is made with a half-circular projection a, which is chambered to receive the disk and provided with a censide of the disk is slotted at f, Fig. 3, and.

The hinge by means of which the jointed piece is attached to the end of the cocking-rod is made to close at the bottom side and prevent the free end of said piece from dropping below the line of its working position with the hammer, as seen in Fig. 2, and to allow the extreme end to travel backward'in the path of the are traversed by the recess cl when the hammer is turned backward on its pivot d in cooking. The cocking-rod can move freely back and forth in a perforation a of the frame, which extends from the chamber in which the disk is located through to the breast of the hammer in line with the recess (Z. The eccentric connection of the cocking-rod with the disk and the pivotal and pin connections of the disk with the frame and fore end afford a crank-lever mechanism fixed to the barrel, whereby the leverage of the turning barrel is applied directly to the cocking-rod for moving it back and forth in the perforation of the frame for cocking the gun and for freeing the way for the fall of the hammer in firing, and the jointed piece at the other end affords slight lateral movement at the point of contact with the hammer, which cooperates with the leverage in the cooking movement.
What is claimed is- 1. In a breakdown gun the combination with the lock, hinged barrels and perforated frame of a crank-lever fulcrumed at the hinging of the barrel and frame and adapted to turn with the barrel and a jointed cocking-rod pivoted IO chambered end, the fore end fixed to said disk,
a cocking-rod in the perforation having one end pivoted to the lower margin of the disk, and a jointed piece, 6 attached to the cocking-rod and projecting out through the perforation, as specified.
