DROP DOWN SMALL ARM.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 29, 1914.
Patented Jan. 19, 1915.
INVENTUR 6 k E L H m Z W wnmmm lamina, or BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
near-news 'smanirniifi.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BAKER, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 87 Snow Hill, Birmingnafm, England, have invented certain new and useful 1m provements in and Relating to Drop-Down Small-Arms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide improved automatic cocking and firing mechanism for drop down guns of the type in which the cocking and hammer levers are mounted on a common pivot.
The invention comprises the pivoting on the cooking lever of a pin which passes through or alongside the hammer lever, and the mounting on the said pin of a spiral firing spring.
Referring to the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings :Figure 1. is a section in the cocked position of mechanism constructed in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 shows the position of the parts after firing. Fig. 3 illustrates the mechanism in the open position of the gun. Fig. 4 is a cross section on ,1, 2, Fig. 1.
In carrying the invention into effect as shown a bell-crank cocking lever a is pivoted to the action body or frame and has a horizontal forward arm I) which lies substantially flush with the bottom of said body when the gim is closed, being retained in that position by a block a on the forward pivoted part of the gun. The cocking lever is slotted as shown to permit the mounting on the same pivot of a hammer lever d so that the two levers lie practically in the d. At the end remote from the pivot the same plane and abut along their adjacent edges. At the upper end of the cocking lever a rearwardly projecting pin e is pivoted, such pin passing alongside of or through a slot as shown in the hammer lever pin 6 is provided with a head f, and a coiled compression spring g is mounted on the pin between said head and-the hammer lever."
- tion'and also for throwing back the hammer lever d. The bolt is actuated for withdrawal by an ordinary finger lever Z acting through a cylindrical pivot m on an eccentric pin a Specification of Letters Patent.

which engages the bolt. A As is usual the pivot m is recessed or slotted to permit the passage therethrough of the striker.
The lower rear part of the hammer lever is provided with a shoulder or notch 0 adapted to be engaged by the forward part of the trigger p in any ordinary or convenient manner. In conjunction with the trigger is arranged a catch or safe 9 pivoted on the frame and terminating in a finger piece 1* and controlled by a spring 8. When the gun is unlocked the safe is automatically pushed into the operative position by the movement of the bolt acting through the medium of a push rod t which abuts against a shoulder on the'bolt. The latter can only move the rod in the direction for engaging the safe with the trigger. In the other direction the rod is moved by the safe. The trigger is controlled by an ordinary spring a.
After the gun has been fired the opening of the same allows the cooking lever to move rearwardly with the hammer lever and firing spring about the common pivot as one piece until the trigger engages the shoulder on the hammer lever. The closing of the gun then forces the cooking lever back relatively to the hammer lever and compresses the' cated and applied to a double barrel gun.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- 1. In drop down small arms, the combination of coaxially pivoted cooking and hammer levers, a pin pivoted to the cooking lever, and a spring mounted on sand pin and abutting against the hammer lever, substantially as described.
2. In drop down small arms, the combination of a bell crank cocking lever, a hammer lever pivoted coaxially with the cocking lever, a pin pivoted on the cocking lever, and a coiled spring mounted on the pin and abutting against the hammer lever, substantially as described.
3. In drop down small arms, the combination of coaxially pivoted bell crank cocking lever and slotted hammer lever, a
pin pivoted on the cocking lever and passlng freely through the slot in the hammer lever, a head on the outer end of the pin,
and a coiled spring mounted on the pin between the said head and the hammer lever, substantially as described.
4. In drop down small arms, the combination of coaxially pivoted cocking and hammer levers, a pin pivoted to the cocking lever, a spring mounted on said pin and abutting against the hammer lever, a hinged trigger detachably engaging the hammer lever, a pivoted safe, a. spring with which the safe engages, a bolt, and a. rod connecting the bolt and safe, substantially as described. 15 In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
