Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 4, 191e'.
Application filed March 17, 1918. Serial No. 754,958.-
To aZZ 'whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, Louis S'ori'rnrssnn, a iubjec't ofqthe German Emperor,- and resiientof Erfurt, Germany, have invented :ertain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Firearms, of which the following' is a specification. .V
This invention relates to an automatic [ire-arm with xed barrel and with a rectilinearly moving breech mechanism opened through the recoil of the re arm by a movthis `breech mechanism being in that on vthe one hand ,a connecting ldevice between the butt-cap and the breech block y engages a depression provided with an incline of the breech block for the purpose o automa-tiable butt-cap, characterized tenon of the cally unlocking this breech block and mov-- mg' it backward, while on the other hand the breech block car'es' an oscillatingl spring controlled locking f, lever which causes the breech block to swing into the locking position.
The accompanying drawings, given by way of example, show one form of embodiment of the invention and in this drawing:
Figure 1 shows the central part lof the firearm, the side-wall being removed. Fig.-2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the rear part of the butt-end ofthe stock; Fig. 3 is a horizontal longitudinal section of the breech mechanism, the knob of the manipulating handle beingv broken off. Fig. 4` is an elevation view of the breech block taken from the right hand side. Fig. 5 is an elevation View of the same part but in the position it assumes when the manipulating knob has been moved back. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line e-f of Fig. 4.
The breech casing 1 which is open at the top is closed by a top or lid 9 which l,toward the rear end bears against the rear wall of the casing l and is rigidly connected there\ with by means of 'a bolt 10. The breech block 3 having a rectangle shaped cross section is mounted in the casing-1 so as to be adapted to slide longitudinally therein. This breech block 3- is locked in the well known manner by being able to oscillate in a corresponding manner around its front end and by bearing with 'its rear end 3a against the step shaped extension 9a of the top or lid 9 (Fig. l). Y
The handle knob bar 6 (Fig. 8) lwhich is driven by a spring 7 `is mounted in -the breech block 3 so as to be able to/be longitudinally moved therein. The lhandle knob bar 6 and the spring 7 are held in the breech block 3 by the firing pin 4 which .passes through Y them (Fig, 3). The breech block 3 carries at its rear end the locking lever 8 which is fulc'rumed on the pivot 8c. A tenon 4" which is Vpositioned at the rear endvof the' firing pin 4 and engages the said locking lever l8, holds the tiring pin 4 securely in the breech block 3 (Fig. 3.).
As seen from Figs. 4 and 5, the rear end of the'handle knob bar 6 is connectedwith theflocking lever 8 in such a manner, that when the bar, 6 is moved backward, the end 8d of the lever 8 moves `up ward in the" position shown by Fig. 5. lihen the handle knob bar is moved forward, the tooth 6a provided at its rear end pulls, by acting upon the tooth 8b of the closing lever 8, the end 8a of the latter downward in the position shown by Fig. 4. Thepart's contained in the breech block '3 work ltherefor in the following manner: Wien the handle kknob bar 6 is moved backward, z'. e. from the position shown by Fig. 4 into the position' shown by Fig. 5, itsrear vend vby striking against the locking lever 8 brings the latter Jfrom the position shown by Fig. 4 into the one shown by Fig. 5. Thus the, rear end ofthe breech block 3 is moved downward and is thus-unlocked in the following manner: When the member 8a is in the position shown by Figi 5, the kbreech block-8 drops a slight degree until the shoulder 9a is freed from its locking notch and allows the block to slide backward in the casing vl. When t-he handle knob bar 6 is again moved forward its tooth 6a provided at its rear end engages the tooth 8b of the lockinglever 8 and pulls the latter in the position shown by'Fig. 4, whereafter the rear end vof the breech block is tilted upward into the locking position. However, the handle k'nob bar 6 is already pushed for. ward by the driving spring 7 and thus the locking lever 8 is started on its closing movement. 4The incline 8a of the locking lever forces the firing pin 4 backward by means of the tenon 4a when the breech mechanism is opened (Figs.`4 and 5). l
vMounted on the rear end of the stock is a butt-cap 16 guided in a` suitable manner so as to be able to move in a longitudinal direction, this butt-cap being connected by vmeans of intermediate members 19, 18 with a tractional rod 20 adapted to be longitudinally shifted in a bore of thebutt end of the stock.
The butt-cap 16 is acted upon in the well known manner by a pressure spring 21. ,The front end of the tractional rod 2O is connected by means of a chain lilik 22 with the oscillating lever v23 which engages a sllde 24 mounted in a .sliding manner in a longil tudinal groove of the breech casing and carries at its front end a tenon 24, The latter passes through the casing 1 andengages a 'longitudinal groove 3b of the breech block 3 A( Figs. 1, 6). The groove 3b of the breech block 3 termina-tes at its rear end in an in-V cline 3c. When the butt-cap is pressed by a and over-rides said inclinefthus pressing 'the breech block downward against the action of the spring 7, until the shoulder of the breech block slips by the step 9, and away from the locked position and is moved backward half of the length of its backward stroke Iagainst, the action of the main spring not shown in the drawings. However, when the motion of the butt-cap is brought about by the recoil of the fire-arm against the shoulder of the marksman, the backward motionl of the parts 20, 22, 23, 24 also takes place so-violently that the oscillating lever 23 performs a jerky motion sothat the breech block is thrown 'backward in the casing entirely into its rearmost position against the action of the'main spring. During this complete backward motion of the breech block, the breech mechanism has again been cocked, the case of the fired cartridge has .been ejected; the breech block thereafter has been forced again forward into the closing position and during this motion a fresh cartridge` has been conveyed from the magazine into the barrel.. The locking of the mechanism then again takes place, owing to the driving spring 7 forcing the handle knob bar 6 again forward and owing to its tooth 6ZL moving the locking lever 8 by means of its tooth Sb in such a manner that the end 8al of the locking lever which bears downward against the casingl forces the breech block upward into the locking posit-ion (Fig. 1) whereby the closing of the mechanism of the firearm has been completed. It is seen that thus the fire-arm has been automatically loaded andis again ready for firing.
Having now fully described my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, i's: L
1. In an automatic fire-arm of the kind described, the combination with the fixed barrel, the stock, the breech casing and the breech block of a butt-cap, means for mountingth'e said butt-cap in a movable manner Von the butt end of the stock, a yspring controlling said butt cap, connecting means for colinecting said butt-cap with said breech block, a groove in said breech block; an ineline .in said opening, a tenon provided on said connecting means and adapted vto en, gage the said incline for the purpose of automatically unlocking the said breech block, a locking lever fulcrumed on the said breech block, a spring controlling said locking` lever which locking lever is adapted to cause the said breech block to oscllate into the locking position, substantially as and for the pur pose set forth. l
y2. In an automatic fire-arm of the kind described the combination with the fixed barrel, the breech casing and the breech block of a locking lever, a hookon said locking lever. a handle knob. a bar connected with said handle knob and adapted to longitudinally slide in said breech block, a spring adapted to control said bar and a hook provided on said bar and adapted to engage the hook of said locking lever, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In an automatic fire-arm of the kind described, the combination with the fixed barrel, the breech casing and the breech block, a locking lever fulcrumed on said breech block, a handle knob bar adapted' to 3 slide longitudinally in said breech block, a firing lpin housed in said breech block and adapted to hold the said bar in position, a spring slid on said firing pin, and a tenon provided on said firing pin and adapted to 1 engage the said locking lever substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Intestimon'y whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS SCHMEISSER.
