PATENT OFFICE.
MAGAZINE FOR FIREARMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 789,199, dated May 9, 1905.
I Application filed March 19, 1904. Serial No. 198,925.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK J. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Cloud, in the county of Stearns and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magazines for Firearms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to magazines for firearms, and has for its object to provide means for retaining the cartridges in the magazine when it is desired to cease firing and at the same time remove the cartridge or exploded shell from the barrel.
To this end my invention consists of a catch that operates to not only hold the cartridges in the magazine, but to also draw them back, so that the first cartridge will be out of the way of the breech-block during the operation necessary to unload the arm or extract the empty shell in the barrel.
The construction and advantages of my invention will fully appear hereinafter and by reference to the accompanying drawings, .in Which Figure 1 is a view of a fragment of the stock and frame of a gun with the magazine in place; the parts being in section and broken away to clearly show my improvement in position, the parts being shown in position to allow the gun to be loaded from the magazine; and Fig. 2, a similar view showing the parts positioned to retain the cartridges in the magazine.
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
A represents the stock of a gun, and B the frame, while (1 represents the magazine holding the cartridges D, that are actuated by a (Not shown.)
My invention consists of a bar E, made of spring metal and slidably mounted in frame B, having its forward end provided with a head F, adapted to enter slot G in magazine 0, and with a tooth H to catch the rim of the forward cartridge D in said magazine. The
bar E is actuated by a lever I, fulcrumed in the stock A, having one end pivotally connected with the end of said bar, while the other end of the lever has a button J pivotally mounted thereon and which slides on a plate K on the lower side of the stock. The forward end of bar E is provided with a beveled surface L, which riding on the beveled surface M at the end of slotGr draws thehead F out of the magazine and the tooth H from engagement with the rim of the cartridge D.
N represents a leaf-spring secured to magazine C and having an angular end- 0 adapted to seat in transverse slots P in the head F to hold it in the slot G or out of the slot, as actuated by lever 1 and button J.
It will be readily understood that when the button J is pushed backward the head F is drawn out of slot G and tooth H from engagement with the rim of cartridge D and the gun will operate as a magazine-arm, but
when the button J is pushed forward, so that head F enters slot G, tooth H engages the rim of the first cartridge in the magazine-tube and draws it back into the tube and the magazine will not operate, though the breech-block may be operated to extract the cartridge in the barrel, or the arm may be used as a singleloader.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is I In a magazine-gun, in combination with the stock, frame of the gun, and magazine-tube having a slot therein with a beveled face, a rod slidably mounted in said frame, a head on said rod having a beveled face toride on the beveled portion of said slot, a tooth on said head adapted to enter said magazine-tube when the rod is retracted, a lever fulcrumed on the stock of the gun and pivotally connected with said rod, and a button pivotally mounted on the free end of the lever and slidably mounted on the surface of said stock, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK J. BAKER. Witnesses:
H. A. MCKENZIE, H. E. MCKENZIE.
