Be it known'thatL CHARLES `A.'YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Enon, in the county ofv Clark and Statefof Ohio, have invented certain new and useful' Improvements in Magazine=Firearnis and I do hereby declare the following to 4be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to whichit appertains to make and use, the same.
My invention relates to firearms of the re peating kindg; and "it consists of iinprove.
ments in various parts of Stich a firearm as is` shown and described in Letters Patent `of the United Statesgranted tome and Silas H. Barton, dated June 18,1901, and numbered 676,809.` In describing my present improvements I shall follow substantiallythe language employed in the aforesaid patent so far as the sameis appropriate and addto the same a description ofmy present improvements and modifications, and the claims hereto appended'v'vill also indicate and define the several features of novelty. e

Like parts are represented by corresponding charactersv ot' reference iu the several views.
\ As in the gun described in the Letters Patent hereinbefore referred to, I preferably ema breech-block frame, that also carries or sustains the other operative parts of the gun. Beneath the barrel isa' magazine b. The barrel is constructed to tit when closed against vately in the rear of the magazine bis an open chamber d,'normally closed at the top by the breech end of the barrel a and normally containing the spring-actuated cartridge or shellv carrier c.
The magazine b consists, preferably, of a straight cylinder of sufficient length to contain the desired number of cartridges and providedwith a springv (not shown) adapted to feed the cartridges rearwardly, substantially as in the former patent referred to. The rear of the magazine is provided with a spring-held catch b2, consistingof an oriticed plate, the oritice being O f the same size as the bore of the magazine. This catch b2 is held normally upward byspringsbg, so that the lower part ofl Athecatchstands above the bottom of the [magazine and formsastop for the rear-most shell or-cartridge and precludes its release until the barrel is nearly closed against the breech. i 1
' As in the patent hereinbefore referred to, the barrel o. is slidingly connected to the breech-block frame. For this purpose that portion of the frame above the magazine is gaging longitudinal grooves or ways a? on the bottom of the. barrel, and the barrel can be moved back and forth on the frame by'means of 'a sliding handle or lgrip This handle or-grip surroundsthe magazine and in the present instance is secured to the barrel by meanxsfof a pin e6, passed'tra'nsversely through the .grip and a slot]ug iu a solid tongue f ou the nnder'side ot thebarrel. The upper side of the sliding handle or grip has securely 'seatedin it a metallic block f3, made with a slot or groovef4, into which the tonguef of necting-pin c". The function ot' the piu e is to hold the barrel and grip together when and ploy a single barrel @,'slidingly mounted uponV the breech-block c, and in the frame immedi-` made with,inwardly-projecting ribs b4, en-` the barrel projects, and the slot or recess f4 y IOO` after these parts are removed from the breechn block frame. The metallic block f3 in the grip is extended rearwardly and is made at its rear end with a laterally-projecting camface f5. The groove d5 in the bottom of' the barrel preferably extends from the point where the grip is attached rearwardly to the end of the barrel, and the barrel is further provided on the bottom with two cross-grooves d8 and a, the rear edges of which are formed square, so as to constitute holding-shoulders; butin the present instance the rear edge of' the f'orward cross-groove a9 is Yformed of a Wedge-shaped dovetailed piece a99, fitting in a transverse dovetailed seatin the bottom ot' the barrel and held `in place by a set-screw passed through a slot. iu the wedge-shaped piece and entering a threaded hole in the barrel. The adjustability of' the wedge-shaped shoulder permits compensation for wear, and therefore a close fit of the breech of the barrel against the breechblock, as will presently appear. The cross-grooves a8 and a9 are adapted to operate in connection with a lock or latch to hold the barrel in its closed position and to limit its movement in opening and closing. The lock or device for holding the barrel consists of a perforated plate am, that extends downwardly around the magazine and is adapted to be pressed upwardly by the springs all. The opening through this plate is elongated, so that it may move up or down on the magazine. The upper edge alzof the plate al is adapted to fit into either ofthe cross-grooves o8 and of and engage the shoulders on the barrel. Resting on an inclined shoulder in the forward side of this` lock-plate is one arm a13 of a rock-shaft. or lever am. This rock-shaft or lever extends forward ly t h rough the fore-arm or frame-piece and is shown to be provided at its opposite end with an arm or iingera, positioned to contact with the laterally-projectingcam-facef5on thegripor handle. Thegripand its projecting cam are so positioned with reference to the barrel that the cam passes o ver the arm @15j ust before the barrel is closed. When the barrel is closed, the arm a15 stands forward of the cam-face f5, with the handle orgrip moved to the rear. The springs all thus move the latch-plate al until the edge Q12 thereof engages the cross-groove d", and thus firmly locks the barrel against the breech-block. 'lhe first outward movement of the handlef,(independent ol' the barrel,) which is permitted by the slotted opening]2 Working on the pin e, will cause the cam-face f5 to move over the arm dland thus depress the same and through the medium of' the rock-shaft or lever amdepress the latchplate, and thus liberate the barrel.
the barrel outward until the latch-plate automatically engages the cross-groove a8 and stops the same. 'lhe magazine-stop b2 is provided with a small upwardly-extending projection b5, over which the groove d5 in the bottom of the barrel travels, and pivoted in A fur ther movement of the handle will then carry a lateralv recess in said groove is a spring; pressed cam -latch am, standing normally across the groove and held against movement in one direction by suitable shoulders, but free to move in the opposite direction so as to stand flush with the side of the groove. This cam-latch a16 is adapted when the barrel is being closed to strike the projection b5 on the magazine-latch and force the same downward until the opening therein will coincide with the bore of the magazine, and thus permit the ejection of' a shell or cartridge into the carrier e, immediately in the reall and under the breech of the barrel. As soon as the cam al in the closingol the barrel has passed the projection b5 the catch will be promptly pressed upward to catch and retain the next succeeding shell or cartridge. As the barrel is vopened the cam-latch als will be turned out of` the way, so as not to operate the magazine-stop until the barrel is again closed, the spring-latch having as soon as it has passed the projection b5 returned to its normal position across the groove a5 and in position to strike and operate said projection and magazine-latch when the barrel is closed again.
As in the former patent herein referred to, the cartridge or shell carrier e consists of' a. U-shaped frame mounted ou the end of a spring-pressed lever e', the lever being preferably provided with an extended finger e2, that tits in the roundopening e3 in the bottoin of' the carrier, so that the carrier is pivoted on the arm. The finger eis also preferably pivoted on the end of the arm ef, as shown at e4, and thus a universal connection is established between the spring-actuated lever e'and the U-shaped frame of the carrier. The arm e extends rearvt'a'rd through an opening below the breech-block and is pivcted at e5 under the firing mechanism, a spring e, placed between the frame and the level', normally tending to throw the forward end of the arm and the carrier upward. The forward edges of the carrier are beveled and adapted to be engaged by the breech end `of the barrel when being closed to force the carrier downward into the chamber d behind the magazine. The inner side of the carrier can be provided with a small spring-actuated linger e7, the upper end of' which is normally pressed inward, so as to lightly hold the shell therein. When the carrier is depressed, a small inward projection e8 in the` Wall of the chamber d will force the upper end of the finger e7 outward, so that it will lie flush with the side of' the carrierand not preventingress of a shell from the magazine. The sides of' the chamber d are also preferably recessed, as shown ard', to receive the sides of' the carrier. In the present instance the carrier is further provided in one of its walls (made shorter than'the other) with an' inwardly-extending .linger elllheld to normally project over the cavity of the carrier by means'of a spring e, pressing against a corresponding IOO IIO
At each side of the breech-block, fitted in suitable recesses therefor, are small springactuated blocks, constituting eXtractors c2, pivoted at points therein forward of their rimengaging ends,`s`uch engaging ends being of beveled hook shape and adapted to engage and hold the rim of thefcartridge orvshell, and the barrel is notched out at each side to receive the spring-actuated extractorsand the construction is such that a shell or cartridge being in the carrier and the barrel closed the carrier will as the barrel is opened force the shell or cartridge npwardpwith the rim of the shell resting 'firmly agains-t the Y breech-block andengaged by the extractors, f the shell being held by the finger e7 and the turning theiinger elo out of thel way;
supplementary bottom 'piece e, so as to properly enter the barrel as-the latter is closed,` after which the pressure of .theyv end of vthe barrel on the carrier depresses itback to its position in the rear of the end of thev maga-` zine, the action ofthe barrel on the pin e13 i In the breech-block below the firing-pin is a springvactuated pin'h20, having its head made with' an angular seat, that engages thelowcr edge of the rim of theshell `1o prevent any `tend-.-
ency of the carrierto drag the shell down asI it is depressed. This' pin protrudes from the breech-block Whenthebarrel is drawn from the breech-block, but is pushed back when the barrel is closed against the breech. The projected'head of the pin h2 does `not obstruct the upward movementof the cartridge and carrier, because the. cartridge inits upward movement is heldV down at `its'forvrvard end by the-end of the outmoviug barrel and tilted, and the rear end of the cartridge will pass upward and around the pinv in curved path. y
As in the former. patent hereinbefore 4referred to, h designates the spring-actuated firing-pin, the reduced end of which extends forward through the breech-block in the usual way and is when released forced against the cartridge by a spring h. firing-pin is held in position by a sear h2, the rear end of which engages a notch h3 in the rear end of the firing-pin. Atone side of the firing-pin there is pivoted a cocking-lever h4, that isadapted to engage a laterally-projecting finger h5 on the firing-pin. This cockinglever is .pivotally connected to a reciprocating cooking-rod h6, that extends forward along one side of the open chamber d to the forward end of the frame, where it has 'a hookshaped 'end that is engaged by a corresponding hook-.shaped end of a similar rod h, slidingly attached to the grip or handle f. The. connection between the rods h6 and h66 is sliding,so that the grip or handle can have a limited movement without moving the cocking-rod h6, the construction being such that as the barrel is moved forward just before it reaches the limit of its stroke the cockinglever h4 is pulled back by the rod hand, impinging the tiring-pin, cocks the gun; but when the grip and magazine are to berem oved from the breech-blockframe the hookshaped ends of these rods h6 and hG6 spring apart and separate. In the frame immediately below and parallel to the firing-pin is a spring-actuated safety-pin 71.21, the rear end fof which is projected by its spring to lie above When cocked, the
an arm H22 on the scar h2 to prevent the sear from being operated by the trigger until'the gun-is closed. lOn the forward end o f the safety-pin 7t21`is a lateral projection`h23, 'that is operated by the forward edge'of the cock- IOO ing-arm when the gun is closed to withdraw the rear end of the safety-pin 7121 from its posit-ion above the arm h22 on the sear,so that thesear can only be loperated and thefiringpin released when the barrel has been firmlyV closed against the breech-block.
accidental release of the times, I can provide an additional safetycatch consisting of a sliding block 7124, having a rearwardly and downwardly extending hook-finger WS to engage a notch hllin a rear extension H55 of the sear. The sliding block 71.24 can have a spring-catch h26. to engage notches 7i" in the frame for the two positions of the safety-catch. The cooking-rod h is To preventV firing-pin at other- IIO shown to have a lateral projection h" to enter and engage a groove els in the side of the carrier tohold the carrier down aridy prevent it from rising until the proper moment.
The latch al@ is furnished at its lower end 2 with a hook projection 0.2, that is engaged by finger-piece (Z3, pivoted at d4. in the` frame. This finger-piece also engages a projection d5 on the under side of the magazine, so that by pressing down the single finger-piece both the barrel and magazine can be separated from the breech-block frame. When the bar rel and grip and magazine are thus separated from the breech-block frame, the barrel and lgrip and magazine are still held together by the'pin e, provided, of course, the said pin ,has not been previously removed.
ISO
The operation of the gun, which can also be gathered from thedescription ot' its several parts, is as follows: The gun is opened and the magazine filled with a number of shells or cartridges. If desired, a shell can be placed in the carrier and one in thebarrel, the carrier, with the shell or cartridge therein, being pressed down, so as to permit the barrel to be closed. After the gun has been tired the outward movement ot' the grip or handle will unlock the barrel, and a further movement of the handle will carry the barrel and cookingarm forward. The shell or cartridge being engaged by the extractors c2 will be extracted from the barrel and held on the breech-block. As soon as the barrel and cocking-arm are sufficiently far forward the spring-actuated arm e will throwthe carrier e upward, and the finger em, while retaining the charged shell, will strike the empty shell or cartridge and force the latter vertically oiI" the breechblock. When the barrel is again closed, a fresh shell or cartridge runs into the barrel, with the rim engaged by the extractors c2, and the carrier will be again pressed down into its place in the rear of the magazine and in position to receive another charged shell or cartridge.
In the drawings I have illustrated my improvements as applied to a shotgun; but obviously the improvements are equally applicable to a ride.
`What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv l. In a tirea1m,the combination ofa breechblock frame, a sliding barrel thereon and a sliding grip, a slotted tongue on the under side of the barrel and a metallic piece seated in the sliding grip having an elongated recess to receive the slotted tongue, and a pin en'- gaging the metallic piece and passing through the slot of the tongue to connect the grip and barrel, said slot being of such length that the thrust of the grip on the barrel shall be borne by the contact of the ends of the tongue and recess in the metallic piece and not by the connecting-pin.
2. The combination of the breech block frame, a sliding barrel thereon, a magazine under the barrel, a chamber in t-he breechblock frame under'the breech of the barrel in the rear of the magazine to receive the carrier, the carrier, a spring-actuated finger in said carrier to project inward over the upper end of the carrier when the barrel is opened and means actuated by the end of the barrel to turn said finger out of said position when the barrelis closed, substantially as described.
3. The combination ofabreech-blockframe, a sliding barrel thereon, a chamber in the breech-block frame under the breech of the barrel to receive a cartridge or shell carrier, the carrier, a movable finger in said carrier,
means to hold said finger to project inward over the upper end of said carrier when the barrel is opened and means actuated by the barrel to turn said finger out of said position when the barrel is closed.
1. The combination of the breech-block frame, a sliding barrel thereon, a magazine under the barrel, a chamber in the breechblock frame under the breech of the barrel and in rear of the magazine to receive the carrier, the carrier and a spring-actuated movable bottom in the carrier.
5. The combination ot' the breech-block frame, a sliding barrel thereon, a magazine under the barrel, a chamber in the breechblock frame under the barrel, and in rear of the magazine to receive the carrier, the
carrier, and a spring-actuated movable bottom in said carrier hinged at its forward end to the forward end of the carrier and adapted to engage the rim of the shell to hold said shell in the carrier.
6. The combination ot' the breech-block frame, a sliding barrel thereon, a magazine under the barrel, a chamber in the breechblock frame under the breech of the barrel and in rear of the magazine, the carrier, a cockiugrod actuated when the barrel is opened and closed, a projection on said cocking-rod adapted to engage said carrier to hold the same when in the chamber and to release the same when the barrel has been opened a predetermined distance, substantially as described.
7. In a firearm the combination of a breechblock frame having a breech-block, a barrel sliding on the breech-block frame toward and from the breech-block, and shell-extractors in the sides of the Vbreech-block and in line with the barrel consisting of small blocks having rim-engaging rear ends and pivoted at their forward ends and springs for holding the rim-engaging ends inward toward each other, substantially as described.
8. The combination of the breech-block frame, a sliding-barrel thereon, a spring-actuated latch to limit the forward movement of the same, a magazine under the barrel havinga catch, and a finger-piece on the breech-block frame engaging both the barrellatch and magazine-catch and adapted to be operated to simultaneously release the barrel and magazine from the breech-block frame.
9. In a firearm the combination of the breech-block frame and breech-block, a barrel sliding on the breech-block frame, ashell or cartridge carrier, spring-actuated extractors in the sides of the breech-block, to catch and hold the sides of the rim of the shell when the latter is pushed rearwardly on the carrier by the barrel, and a spring-protruded seat in the breech-block constructed to support the shell at the lower edge of its rim, substantially as described.
l0. In combination with a breech-block frame, a sliding barrel thereon, a spring-actuated tiring-pin, a sear to engage and hold the same when cocked, a cooking-lever adapted to cock said firing-pin when the barrel is ICO IIO
ed to cock said firing-pin when the barrel is.
moved forward, a spring-actuated safetycatch'to prevent the operation of the sear when thel barrel is moved forward and ar'- ranged to be operated by the cockingelever to release the sear when the barrel is being` closed, and a manually-operated safety-catch to engage and lock the Sear when the barrel 'is closed.
f 12. The combination of a breech block frame, a sliding barrel thereon, a chamber in the breech-block frame under the breech of the barrel to receive a cartridge or shell carrier, the carrier, a finger turning on a vertical pivot in the side of the carrier to be turned laterally across the top of the same and means for yieldingly holding said iinger across the top of the carrier.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses. c CHARLES A. YOUNG. Vitnesses:
