lSpecification of Letters Patent.
- Application filed October 4, 1916. Serial No. 123,645.
To all whom t may concern;
lBe it known that ll, CHARLES F. LEFEVER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Plymouth, in" the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guns, of which the following is a speciicap portion of the barrel and frame;

'lhe invention has special reference to a sprmg-actuated air gun, and more particularly to that type in which the spring is compressed by a longitudinally-movable.
handle for pump action. Heretofore guns of this type have been made with removable stocks, but it is usual to mount some portion of the mechanism on each of the separable members. Thus, where the barrel is detachable from the frame and stock, care and a certain amount of slll must be exercised in `re-assembling the parts to render the mechapermanently attached thereto and preferably formed integral therewith. C is the stock which is provided at its forward end with a frame member D telescopically` en.-
gageable with the frame member B and secured thereto by a single screw or fastening pin E. This fastening device is so arranged that it may be inserted and withdrawn without interference with the operating mechanism, all of the parts of which are mounted on the members A and B.-
The operating mechanisml comprises an air compression cylinder F, a piston G therein provided with a rearwardly-extending shank H, a spring l sleeved on this shank, a lever mechanism for withdrawing this shank and a sear and trigger for retaining and releasing the shank. rll`he cylinder, piston and spring are preferably inserted as a unit through the open rear end of the frame B and are anchored in position, first, by an abutment J in the barrel A, and second, by a detachable abutment K for the :inner end of the spring. The abutment J is preferably a tubular bushing, which is inserted imc the barrel Av and is permanently attached thereto, preferably by spot welding. The air compression cylinder F is provided withy a piston abutment L secured therein, which abutment bears against the bushing J and holds the cylinder and piston yfrom forward movement. For anchoring the spring I the abutment K lis preferably formedl of a stamping or pressedsheet-metal member, which is insertible through an aperture M in the lower side of the barrel, having a tongue portion K engaging a recess in the upper side of the barrel and also provided with rearwardly-extending ianges K2 which fit lwithin the bore of the barrel. To engage the abutment, the sprin is first placed under compression by a suitable instrument so as to move its rear end forward beyond the aperture M. The member K may then be inserted, said member extending between the parallel sides of the shank H which is bifurcated, and when inserted the spring l is released so as to press upon the abutment, forcing the Iianges K2 into the bore of the barrel in rear of the aperture M and thereby holding said` abutment from displacement.
'llhe mechanism for compressing the spring comprises the handle N slidably secured to the barrel, and the toggle lever having the members 0 and U pivotally attached to each other, the one being pivoted to the handle "N and theother fulcrumed on the pin lP- in the frame. rlFhese lever members d 0 are preferably formed of sheetthe member O is embraced by the parallel flanges B of the frame. The operative convnectionbetween the toggle levers O and O andthe shank of the piston is formed by a lever Q pivoted at Q near the lower edge of the frame, and having its free end fashf ioned to engage with the bearing R and the rear end of the piston shank H. The lever Q is connected to the lever O by a link S, and the angular relation ofthe parts is such that the lever O and link S constitute a toggle normally bent or straightened as they are moved rearwardly. This will increase the power of the movement.v in pro-portion to the increased tension of the spring, as the piston and its operating shank are moved rearward. T is a Sear pivoted at Tito the frame and having a hooked end T2 for engaging with the bearing R. U is the trigger pivoted at U and having a portion U2 engaging the sear to operate the same. The trigger U is also provided with a forwardlyprojecting portion U3 which is in proximity to a safety catch V, the latter being in the form of a bell-crank lever, one arm V of which bears against the lever Q when the latter is in normal position. The arrangement is such that when the lever Q is swung rearward the safety catch V is permitted to move under the actuation of the spring W, which will engage the end V2 of said catch beneath the projection U3 of the trigger locking said trigger from movement. Thus the trigger and scar will be held in locked position during. the entire-movement of actuating the levers O and O and compressing the spring, and it is only when the actuating levers are restored to normal position and the lever Q swings forward that it will engage the catch V and withdraw the same from interference with the trigger.
In operation, the rearward movement of .the handle N will break down the toggle levers O and O, which in turn will actuate the link S and the lever Q. It will be noted that in the swinging of the lever Q its arc of movement is the reverse of the arc traversed by the lever O at the point of its pivotal connection with the link S. This retains said link S at a favorable angle to the leve-r Q during the greater part of the movement, while the sald link S and the lever O are progressively straightened or moved into alinement to produce increased power.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a gun, a barrel and frame section, operating mechanism mounted in complete operative relation upon said barrel and frame Section, and a stock section telescopically engaging said barrel and frame section and secured thereto without interference with said mechanism, the telescoping portion of said stock section surrounding the telescoping portion of said barrel and frame section.
' 2. In a gun, a barrel section having a shoulder or abutment therein, an air compression cylinder, a piston, an operating shank 'and a sprlng, all of the said parts being insertible into the barrel from the rear end thereof into engagement with said abutment, and an abutment for the rear end of the spring laterally engageable with said barrel.
3. In a gun, a barrel section having a shoulder or abutment therein, air compression means comprising a cylinder, a piston, a piston shank and a spring, all insertible in said barrel through the rear end thereof, Withthe cylinder in engagement with said abutment or shoulder, vand anabutment for the rear end of the spring laterally insertible' through an aperture in said barrel and having a locking shoulder for retaining the same from disengagement when under the pressure o f the spring.
4. In a gun, the combination with a barrel section having a shoulder or 'abutment therein, of air compression means comprising a cylinder, a piston therein, a bifurcated piston shank and a spring sleeved on said shank, all of said parts being insertible in the barrel through the rear end thereof, and an abutment for the rear end of the spring laterally insertible through an aperture in said barrel and between the furcations of said shank, said abutment having a shoulder for holding the same from disengagement when under the pressure of the s ring.
5. In a' gun, a barrel section havmg parallel side plates depending therefrom, constituting a frame, a break-down lever extending parallel to said barrel and having its rear link pivoted between the side plates of said frame, a plunger shank retractible rearwardly in said barrel, a lever for directly actuating said shank fulcrumed at its lower end between said side plates of the frame, a link connecting said lever with the rear member of said break-down lever and constituting in connection therewith a toggle which is progressively straightened, a sear for engaging said piston shank, a trigger for releasing said sear, all of said parts being mounted on said barrel and frame.
6. In a gun, the combination with a barlrel section having depending parallel side llt) Learner i ing4 a frame, a piston shank movable rearwardly in said barrel, a lever for directly actuating said shank pivoted at its lower end between said side plates, an operating lever fulcrumed between said sideplates at a point above the pivot for the irst-mentioned lever, and a link connecting said levers, arranged substantially at right angles to said rst-mentioned lever in its initial position and pivotally connected to said second-mentioned lever at a point below its fulcrum.
'8. lln a gun, a barrel, a frame depending therefrom and apertured to form a trigger guard, a lever mechanism fulcrumed in said frame, a trigger mounted in said frame, having its actuating portion in registration with said aperture, and a safety catch for said trigger in the form of a bell-crank lever ad` jacent to said guard, one arm of said lever being in engagement with said lever mechanism when in normal position to unlock the trigger, and being released from said lever mechanism during' its initial movement to lock said trigger.
9. ln a gun, a .unit comprising a barrel section, a frame section having parallel side plates depending from the barrel, air`compression means comprising a piston, an operating shank and a spring, all arranged within said barrel section, and mechanism mounted in said trame section, including a sear, a
spring therefor, a trigger, and a compound lever pivotedv at one end in said frame and slidably mounted upon said barrel section at the other end, and a stock section engageable with and disengageable from said frame section without interference with said mechanism. r
10. lln a gun, a barrel and trame section, operating mechanism mounted in complete operative relation on said barrel and frame section including a trigger, and a telescopic stock section engageable with and disengageable from said barrel and frame section without interference with said mechanism, said telescopic stock section extending to a point in advance of said trigger.
11. lln a gun, a barrel section and parallel side plates depending therefrom constituting a frame, a portion of said side plates being cutaway to form a trigger opening and guard, a compound klever mounted between the side plates of said frame, a trigger also mounted on and between said side plates and having its actuating portion ex-V tending into registration with said openings and astock section engageable with and disengageable from said barrel section without interference with said lever and trigger mechanism. g
