CHARLES L. PORTER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINATHON-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,800, dated February 28, 1905.
Application filed deptember 19, 1902. Serial No. 124,078.
To rtZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, UniAnLns L. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Qhicage, in the county of Cook and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful lrm'irovcments in Combination-Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in a combination-tool the stock of which is so shaped as to form a cor'iperating wrench and can-opener. It is also preferably provided with several other devices which add greatly to its utility.
in the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line 2, Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by an arrow; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view through the lugs and can-opener blade on the line/J: 4: of Fig. 1.
A represents the stock or handle. which is tapered to form a point at one end and tapered also transversely at the said end to form two cutting edges diverging from the said point, the said point and edges "forming a canopener blade G. A wrench feature is formed by companion rigid jaws I) projecting at right angles from the stock and located at the base of the said can-opener blade C. These jaws l) are spaced apart to engage a small nut and are adapted to serve as fulcruins for the can-opener blade. The said stock is also preferably n'ovided with the following devices, which materially increase the range of its utility. On the end opposite the can-opener the stock is fashioned into a screw-driver B. Between the can-opener blade (1 and the screw-driver B is a longtudinal elongated slotopening 6. A plate 4: forms a part of-the stock and is located in the slot-opening I) and somewhat nearer to the can-opener end. This plate is cut away on the front side, forming a seat or backing 5 for the reception of an instrument-sharpening emery-disk 6, the periphery of which also bears against a curved shoulder 7, formed in the cut-away surface of the plate. The side walls of the slot-opening 7) are curved out to form a jog 8, Fig. 1, corresponding to the periphery of the disk and provide a bearing therefor in connection with shoulder and expose a certain proportion of the sharpening-surface for the convenient contact of the instrument to be sharpened in holding it at the right angle. \Vith this object in view the inner adjacent sides of the slot-opening are very slightly curved, so as to present substantially ti-shaped notches S), in which an object like the blade of a knife may be inserted for the purpose of sharpening the same. In the operation of sharpening a knife the screw-driver end of the device is held in one hand, the opener-blade end being made to bear on a substantial support, and the knifeblade inserted in the notches 9 and drawn through as often as may be necessary.
The notches 10 are of a less depth and present sides of a more obtuse angle in. comparison with notches 9. This is for the purpose of making these parts correspond to the bevel cutting edges of shears or scissors. so that the same may be properly sharpened without impairing the cutting action.
The sharpening-disk is ad jnstably securedv in place by a bolt 1]., which provides for the turning of the disk in bringing all of the sharpening-surface into use from time to time as may be necessary.
The plate 4L is provided with the contracted extension part 12, which is cut away mljaccnt to the end to form a shmildcr l3. A corkscrew 14: has the shank end 15 thereof bent around at right angles and pivotally inserted in the end of extension .part 12 in advance of shoulder 13. The walls of the slot opening are beveled along their inner sides, as at (l, so as to contract or narrow the space between for the reception of the corkscrew, the exterior surface of the coils of which will impinge on the beveled surface with a slight wedgil'ig action and loosely retain the corkscrew in its closed position, as best shown in Fig. 3.
VV'hen required for use, the corkscrew may turned outward to its open position for use, the corkscrew comes to a stop on shoulder in retaining the same in its right-angled pol anda wrench formed by apair of lugs, curved 5 sition with reference to the handle part. By on their outer surface, extending perpendicuthis arrangement a number of useful devices l lar to one side of the stock and in transverse 5 may be added to the stock provided with a can-opener blade and a wrench cooperating therewith, which really composes my invenalinement, said sharpened lateral edges servmg as a reversible can-opener blade and the 18, which limits its open movement and assists l at said end, forming sharpened lateral edges.
