FASTENING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,067, dated February 21, 1905. Application filed September 6, 1904. Serial No. 223,421.

To all whu'nt it new concern:

Be itknown that LOLYDE S. N ONNEMACHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful ing Devices, of which the following is a speci fication.

My invention relates to fastening devices for garments, and has for its principal object the production of a device which may be used for several diflerent purposes in connection with wearing-apparel.

A further object is to produce a fastening device which is capable of read T attachment and easy adjustment in the uses for which it is designed.

More specifically stated, one of the objects of my invention is the production of a fastening device for the adjusting-straps of mens washable vests and trousers to be used in place of the ordinary buckle and which may be detachably secured without sewing. Certain features of the invention render the device and its various modifications applicable to other uses also.

The invention resides in the improvements of construction and details of parts of a fastening device hereinafter set forth in this specification and the appended claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my improved fastening device as arranged for use as a hose-supporter for women and children. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, the attaching-pin and clip being removed. Fig. 4. is a side view, and Fig. 5 a plan, showing the device in use as a detachable fastener for the straps of mens wash vest-s and trousers. Fig. 6 shows the device of Fig. 1 in use as a hose-supporter, and Figs. 7 and 8 show slight modifications.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the body portion of the device, which is preferably a sheet-metal punching. Body portion A is provided with an opening a, one side, a, of which is concave-curved to constitute a gripping edge for the strap or strip to be fastened. This concave-curved gripping edge a Improvements in Fastenl is ,of great importance, and its action on a flat flexible strap is very efiicient, as will be more fully described hereinafter. Adjacent opening a and between it and end of the body portion is an auxiliary opening or slot a I/Vhile I prefer the concave-curved form of gripping edge a, this is not absolutely essential, but may be varied by having this edge slope in any suitable manner from the ends of the slot toward the center thereof and away from the opposite side. At the other end of the body portion I provide means for fastening a second strap or strip, which means, as shown in Figs. 1 to 6, consists of a buckle B of any well-known or suitable design. As shown in Fig. 7 such means consists of a duplication of the curved-gripping-edge feature of the invention and as shown in Fig. 8 the fastening-slots of mens-hose supporter. It will thus be seen that the auxiliary slot is adjacent thegripping edge that is, upon that side of the main slot-while the additional fastening means, such as the buckle, is on the opposite side of the main slot.

C is a safety-pin, by means of which the fastener may be attached to certain parts of the wearingapparel of the user and is detachably connected to the body portion A by a clip 0.

The manner of use of the device is apparent from the drawings and will now be described briefly.

Referring first to Figs. 4 and 5, l and 2 indicate the straps at the back of trousers or vests. Strap l is brought over and passed down through opening a and its end brought up through opening a 'Any pull on the device or strap 1 will now resultin the gripping of the strap by gripping edge a and any slipping entirely prevented, owing to the curve of edge a. The other strap, 2, is passed through the buckle member B. Adjustment may be effected by either strap.

When used as a ladies or childrens hose supporter, as shown in Fig. 6, clip is inserted in slot or opening (0 pin C being intended for attachment to the corset or waist. The elastic is passed double through the buckle B, the idle end extending through opening a and the portions 4 and extending down and provided with means (not shown) for attachment to the hose. Adjustment and replacement of the elastic are thus very easy. In use the pin carrying the clip 0 is left in the corset from day to day and the body portion A of the device, removed from the clip, thus enabling the device to be given the same position readily.

The modified form of the device shown in Fig. 7 is intended for use as in Figs. 4 and 5, the duplication of the slots or openings replacing the buckle member.

In the form shown in Fig. 8 the invention is adapted to mens-hose supporters, the action of the curved gripping edge being the same. The other end of the elastic is brought in through slot a".

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s

1. In a fastening device, a body portion formed with a slot having a gripping edge which slopes from the ends of the slot toward the center thereof and away from the opposite side, said body portion being formed also with an auxiliary slot adjacent the gripping edge of the first-mentioned slot, and additional fastening means on said body portion opposite said gripping edge.

2. In a fastening device, a body portion formed with a slot having a gripping edge which slopes from the ends of the slot toward the center thereof and away from the opposite side, said body portion being formed also with an auxiliary slot adjacent the gripping edge of the first-mentioned slot, and a buckle member attached to said body portion opposite said gripping edge.

3. In a fastening device, a body portion having a slot therein formed with a concavecurved gripping edge, and provided with an auxiliary slot adjacent the gripping edge of said first-mentioned slot, and additional fastening means on said body portion opposite said curved gripping edge.

I. In a fastening device, a body portion having a slot therein formed with a concavecurved gripping edge, and provided with an auxiliary slot adjacent the gripping edge of said first-mentioned slot, and a buckle member attached to said body portion opposite said curved gripping edge.

5. In a fastening device, a body portion having a slot therein formed with a concavecurved gripping edge, additional fastening means on said body portion opposite the gripping edge of said slot, a second slot adjacent the curved gripping edge of said first slot, and a removable pin-carrying clip for engagement with said second slot.

6. The combination with the free ends of two straps to be fastened, of a fastening device comprising a body portion having a slot therein formed with a concave-curved gripping edge engaging one of said straps which is doubled upon itself, and additional fastening means on said body portion engaging the other of said straps.
