Description

No. 780,585. I PATENTED JAN. 24, 1905.
E. G. TEBBUTT. I
BUTTON STRIP FOR GARMENTS. APPLICATION FILED MAB.15, 1904.
PV/TNESSES: [NVENTOR I EMWJMQZZZZW UNITED STATES Patented January 24, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
ELIZABETH Gr. TEBBUTT, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
BUTTON-STRIP FOR GARMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part'of Letters Pa en N0. 780,585, dated J anuarv 24, 1905.
Application filed March 15, 1904 fierial No. 198,230.
To alliuhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH G. TEBBUTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Button-Strips for Garments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for attaching to and removing buttons from garments; and its object is to provide a new and improved attachment for conveniently and quickly attaching to and removing buttons from garments of every description to permit the garment to be washed and ironed without hindrance by the attachment and without danger of injuring the latter.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
It is well known that buttons are frequently broken during the washing or ironing of garments to which they are attached, and it is desirable, therefore, that the buttons be removed for the purpose of washing and ironing. To accomplish this removal, as well as the reat- .tachment of the buttons, after Washing, with the least trouble and annoyance is the aim of the present invention.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improvement as applied to a childs waist. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view, partly in section, of the improvement. Fig. 3 is a modification of a double button with means for securing it to a garment. Fig.4 is aperspective view showinga series of five buttons embodying the invention, each of the buttons varying slightly in construction from the others.
The waist A, on which the improvement is applied, is provided at the waist portion with a reinforcing-band B, preferably secured to the waist material by sewing or otherwise. Between the waist material and the reinforcing-band B is inserted a continuous tape C,
which is stitched to the waist material and band at the desired places and is then inserted through eyelets D in the waistband at the desired points on the band where the buttons are to be attached, and after the tape has been inserted through the eyelet-hole a knot E is tied in the tape and terminating in a loop F to attach thereto buttons G at the desired places on the garment. Thebutton G is provided with two or more eyes g near the center thereof. From each of the eyes 9 a slot it leads to the outer peripheral edge c' of the button, so that instead of threading the fastening-tape C through the eyes 9 it is only necessary'to force the tape through the slots it into the eyes 9. The slots It may be straight or lead radially from the eye to the outer edge of the button,as shown in buttons 1, 2, and 3, or they may-have any desired angle or curvature, as shown in buttons i and 5, as shown in Fig. 4.
As shown in Figs. 1,2, and 4, all of the buttons may be secured by a single fasteningtape, or, as shown in Fig. 3, a separate tape may be used for each button.
As shown in Fig. 3, I may employ my improved button in connection with a button G of ordinary construction, the two constituting a double button. This arrangement will be found advantageous for many purposes, and by slipping the securing-tape out of the slots of the slotted button both buttons may be quickly removed from a garment. The loop shown in Fig. 3 may be of any desired length to represent buttons having shanks of different lengths.
The manner of attaching and detaching the buttons will be readily understood from the drawings, and the utility of the device is apparent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a garment attachment, the combination with the reinforcing'strip permanently attached to the garment, the button-strip permanently secured between the garment and reinforcing-strip, and having loops projecting through the reinforcing-strip, of buttons having a pair'of apertures and having slots leading into the apertures to permit the engagement of the buttons on the loops, substantiall y as described.
2. in a garment attachment, the combinaion With a permanently-secured button-strip having permanent loops, of removable buttons for engagement With the loops, each button having a pair of apertures located near the center thereof with slots of less Width than the diameter of the apertures leading IO into said apertures from the periphery of the button whereby the buttons may be engaged With and disengaged from the loops, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two '5 subscribing witnesses.
