Description

June 13, 1933. c. T. LA MONT GARMENT SUPPORTER Filed Nov. ,l8, l93l u A AAAANAAWNAA AAA/ AAA stud is carriedby a for engaging over the stud,
Patented June 13, 1933 CHARLES T. LA MONT, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN GARMENT SUPPORTER Application filed November 18, 1931.
This invention relates to garment supporters, and more particularly to hose supporters of the type generally employed in womenswear for holding up silk hose, the invention, however, being susceptible'for use in connection with all types of garters.
With the ordinary stocking supporters now on the market, considerable dilficulty is experienced therewith, in view of the fact that the tabs supporting the male portion of the stocking fastener become quickly worn, allowing the metal portion thereof to tear the stocking. In all types of stocking fasteners that I am familiar with, a resilient flexible tab, and a metal loop is provided the stocking being placed held thereon by the loop. The resilient stud in all instances is anchored to a metal back plate, which is in turn carried by a flexible tab. In some instances, the metal back plate is to the thinness thereof, the same tends exposed and owing to cut the fragile threadsof the stockings. In other instances, the metal back plate is covered by the tab, but the tab soon wears and the backplate works through the tab and tears or rips the stocking.
. In womens wear, it is customary to replace the entire garter when the tabs become worn, which naturally results in undue expense and labor on the part of the wearer. It is, therefore, one of the primary objects of my invention to provide a novel means for constructing the tab of the stocking fastener, so that the same will not tear or harm the most fragile stocking, and which can be used in conjunction with the ordinary types of metal loops now employed on stocking fasteners. 1
Another prime object of my invention is the provision of a stocking fastener embodying a tab having sewed in the lower active end thereof, a ball, which takes the place of the usual stud, the ball being associated -with the tab in such a manner that all injury to the hose is eliminated, in that no rough or sharp edges will be presented to the stocking, even though the tab should Wear in the course of time.
over the stud and responding parts Serial No. 575,738.
Another salient object o the provision of a tab TES PATENT OFFICE f my invention is for stocking fasteners to be used as a new article of manufacture, and WlllCh can be assoclated with an ordinary pair of garters by merely cutting the ordinary tabs away and by looping the new tab over the cross bar of the metal loop, whereby the necessity of sewing the tab in position is eliminated.
. With these and other objects in view, the lnvention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 1s a front elevation of a tab for a stocking supporter constructed in accordance with my invention, parts of the same being shown broken away and in section to illustrate structural details;
Flgure 2 is an edge elevation of the same;
Figure 3 is a front elevation of a garter showing the ordinary tab removed therefrom and my improved tab associated therewith;
Figure 4 is a rear elevation showing my 7 tab associated with a garter illustrating the manner; of looping or tyin tion. 7
Figure 5 g the tab in posiis a view similar to Figure 3 illustrating another method of tying or looping the improved tab Figure 6 is a on the garter; detailed front elevation illustrating a form of metal loop which is particularly adapted for use in connection with my tab.
Figure 7 is a detailed front elevation illustrating one of the steps in knotting the tab over the cross that type of knot Referring to the bar of the metal loop to form shown in Figures 3 and 4. drawing in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corviews, the letter A throughout the several generally indicates a garter tab constructed in accordance with my invention. This tab A is adapted to be Hill-1 lized in connection with an ordinary garter or stocking supporter G, as clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawing stituted for the ordinary stud (not shown) ordinari and is to be subtab and resilient ly associated u'ith llm I such supporters. As shown, the garter or supporter G includes the elastic strap 10, which is looped through the metal connecting piece 11 of the female or stud receiving metal loop 12. The elastic strap 10 is ordinarily provided with an adjusting buckle (not shown in the present illustration).
As is clearly shown in Figures 3, 4: and 5, the metal connecting piece 11 is secured to the metal fastener loop 12 by means of a fold ed metal band 13.
In the ordinary type of garters now on the market, the connecting piece 11 carries a depending tab having secured thereto by a metal back piece, a resilient male stud and the stocking is ordinarily placed over thls stud, after which the metal fastener loop 12 is placed over the stocking and stud. As previously described, the metal back plate of the stud tears the stocking and the tab is soon rendered unfit for further service.
In accordance with my invention, I utilize a novel tab and my tab is formed in a novel way, so that the same can be detachably associated with the metal fastener loop without sewing and constructed in such a way as to not harm the stocking, even after the tab itself wears.
As shown, my tab A can be constructed from a length of fabric tape 15, and this tape can be folded intermediate its ends to provide a pair of parallel strips 16. The ends of these strips are sewed together transversely at their ends as at 17, and up through sides for a slight distance, as at 18. This forms a pocket which is placed a spherical knob or ball 19. After the spherical knob or ball 19 is placed in the pocket, the strips are sewed together transversely, as at 20, so that the ball will be secured in place against further movement.
This ball can be made of any desired maeterial, but I preferably construct the same of some substance which will not be too heavy in weight and which will not discolor the stocking. A glass sphere of the desired size can be admirably used in connection with the tab.
These tabs can either be sold in the open market as new articles of manufacture to be substituted for the old tabs of garters when the same become worn, or can be utilized with new garters at the time of manufacture thereof.
Where the tabs A are utilized with old garters on the i'narket, the same can be conveniently attached to the garter fastener in lieu of the old tab, simply by cutting the old tab away and looping the tab over the metal connecting piece 13 of the garter fastener.
Different ways can be utilized for looping the tab over the metal connecting piece and in Figures 3 and 4 I have illustrated one way and in Figure 5 I have illustrated anoth way. I
As shown in Figures 3, A and 7, the tab can be threaded from the rear over the connecting bar 13 and the strips 16 of the tab can be brought over the front of the metal loop 12, after which the ball end of the tab can be pulled down. This will effectively anchor the tab in position. In Fig. 7 the tab has been threaded over the bar 13 and the side portions have been slipped over the front of the metal loop. Obviously, when the ball end of the tab is pulled down, the side portions 16 will be drawn upwardly over the front of the bar 13, as shown in Figure 3 of the drawing.
In Figure 5, the tab is placed in position similar to the manner shown in Figures 3, 4 and 7 with the exception that the loop portion of the tab is not brought over the front of the metal loop. In this form the tab is threaded from the rear over the metal con- ;35
necting bar 13 and the ball end of the tab is passed through the tab between the side portions thereof, after which the ball end of the tab is pulled down. This will effectively draw the loop end of the tab in position around the connecting bar 13 and thus tie the tab in place.
i This tab is utilized for securing the stocking in place similar to the ordinary tab with the resilient stud, in that the stocking is placed over the ball end of the tab, and the stocking and ball end is inserted through the metal fastening loop 12 and then brought down in the narrow end of the loop. Obviously, no sharp edges are provided in the tab for tearing the stocking, and yet the stocking will be firmly held against slipping movement.
Whilemy tab can be utilized in connection with any type of metal fastener loops now 7 on the market, I have provided a new type of fastener loop with effectively utilized.
In Figure 6 I have illustrated this new type of loop. This metal fastener loop is preferably of a single length of wire 25, folded at a point intermediate its ends as at 26 to provide the. spaced parallel legs 27, which are bent outwardly in opposite directions to provide the flared entrance portion 28. Above the entrance portion 28, the wire legs are bent inwardly and secured together by a metal fastener band 29, after which the wire is bent in opposite directions as at 30, and then inwardly as at 31 to define a bale or loop 32 through which the elastic 33 of the garter can be threaded.
In use of this form of fastener loop, the tab is knotted over the metal band 29 in any preferred manner, or in the manner illustrated in Figures 3, 1 and 5.
Changes in detail may be made without de parting from the spirit or the scope of thls invention, but what I claim as new is:
1. In a garment supporter the combination with a metal loop having a restricted which the tab can be portion and a connecting bar above said restricted portion, of a detachable tab for the metal loop including a single length of a flexible material folded upon itself to provide a pair of side portions, stitching securing the lower ends of the side portions together to form a pocket, a knob in said pocket, the tab being threaded around the connecting bar with the stitched end of the tab passed through the side portions of the tab to detachably secure the tab to the connecting bar.
2. In a garment supporter, afastener including a metal loop having a restricted portion and a connecting bar above the restricted portion, and a flexible tab including substantially parallel side portions and a head carried by the outer ends of the side portions for cooperation with the restricted portion of the metal loop, the side portions of the tab constituting means whereby the tab can be knotted over the connecting bar of the loop to detachably unite the tab therewit In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin. e
