WATCHCASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 778,251, dated December 27, 1904.

Application filed July 9, 1904. Serial No. 215,930.

To LZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALBERT l/I. KILBERG, of Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improved Watch .Tamb-Clamps; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, and to the letters or' reference marked thereon.

The object of this invention is to provide an improved means for securing the works ot' a watch in the case whereby not only will the frame or movement plates and case-center mutually support each other1 but the connecting means will distribute the strains uniformly and at the same time retain the movement securely without liability of accidentally becoming loosened.

A further object of the invention is to provide a movemcnt-securing means which will not weaken either the movement-plates or case and which may be used in connection with very thin movements and cases without increasing the thickness.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a section through a watch with the wheel-train omitted and showing the application oi' the present invention. Fig. 2 is a section through the jamb-clamp alone. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the jamb-clamp. Fig. 4 is an elevation of a modified form oi' the jambclamp. Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing one mode ot' applying or removing the jambclamp.

Like letters of reference in the several ligures indicate the same parts.

The watchcase-center is indicated by the letter A, the top plate of the movement by the letter B, and the bottom plate of the movement by the letter C. The case-center A is provided with a seat, preferably annular, for the rim of the bottom plate ot' the movement, as indicated at-D, and the rim at the back side of the center is formed with an annular seat for cooperation with the movement-securing device, which I shall term a.jamb-elamp.7 This jamb-clamp (indicated by the letterE in the accompanying drawings) is preferably in the form oi' a ring, the periphery oi' which is formed to seat on the rim of the case-center, while its inner diameter is threaded, as at e, for engaging a corresponding thread on the periphery of the top plate of the movement. The inner edge of the rim and the periphery of the jamb-clamp are preferably formed on a corresponding taper or bevel to form a conical seat and bearing, as at f; but it is obvious that the jamb-clamp may be formed with a flange or shoulder f', vFig'. 2, to take a bearing on the outer side of the rim.

In securing the parts together the movement is putin place trom the front of the case` and the iamb-clamp is screwed onto the top plate of the movement, said clamp being turned until it takes a `iirm bearing around the entire rim ot the case, thereby drawing the movement lirmly into the ease and holding' it by a uniform pressure front and back.

The i'ace of the jamb-clamp is preferably made to lie substantially iiush with the top plate, so as to present a neat appearance and to permit of the watch being made thin and light. For convenience it may be provided with small holes 71 for the insertion of the points oi' a wrench or other instrument,where by it may be readily turned into place or removedwas shown, for instance, in Fig. 5.

Obviously the watchcase may be ot' the hunting-case type or ot' any other type so far as the present invention is concerned, and it is also obvious that the jarnb-clamp may itself form a dust-guard by being closed in on one side, as indicated at l, Fig. 4, and such dustguard may, as usual, be provided with a glass or crystal, should it be desired, to permit inspection of the movement without opening the same to the air.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-4 1. The combination with a watchcase-center having its rim provided with annular seats and a movement having a bottom plate with a peripheral bearing cooperating with the seat on one rim and a top plate, oi' an annular jamb-clamp threaded onto the edge o' the top plate of the movement and taking a bearing on the annulur seat of the other rim of the case-center; substantially as described.
