Description

W. c. KING. "JELLY-GLASSES.
Patented Feb.2'7, 1877.
Ill
N. PETERS, PHQTOMTHOGRAPNER, WASHINGTON. D. C,
UNITED STATES PATENT @ENIGEn WILLIAM o. KING, OE UNION TOWNSHIP, ALLEGHENY COUNTY, PA.
IMPROVEMENT IN JELLV-GLASSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,714, dated February 27, 1877; application led December 18, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lknown that I, WILLIAM C. KING, of Union township, county of Allegheny, State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered a ne7 and useful Improvementin Jelly-Glasses; and I do hereby declare the following tO be a full, clear, concise, and exact description there# I of, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in Whichlike letters indicating like parts- Figure l is an elevation, slightly in perspective, of my improved jelly-glass and cap. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detached sectional view of one edgeof the cap and of the packingring.
My present invention relates to the class of manufactures commonly known under the name of jellyglasses57 and consists of a pressed-glass receiving-vessel made largest at its mouth and tapering gradually to its lower end, as in an ordinary jelly-glass, combined With a pressed-glass cap, an annular ange O11 which enters the mouth sufficiently' far for a packingiing, rectangular in cross-section, to be arranged cornerwise in an annular V- shaped recess On the outer face of the ange, and so that an outwardly-'projecting corner shall engage the inner Wall of the mouth of thejellyglass.
rlhe jelly-glass B is made in the usual way, by pressing, and ofany desired size. For some purposes I propose to make them much larger than has been usual. Its cavity is largest at its mouth. It is covered by a cap, A, the rim of which rests on the mouth of the glass B. On the under side of the cap A is an annular iange, a, extending down far enough for a V-shaped groove, c, to be made in its outer periphery. In this groove I arrange a packing'ring, e, of india-rubber or other suitable material, which is made rectangular .in cross-section, so that, with one of the angular corners occupying the bottom of the V-shaped groove c. the diagonally-opposite corner Will, when the cap is iu place, engage the cavity-Wall of the mouth of the glass B with a moderate degree of tightness, such as will hold the cap in place as against any tendency to be or become loose in ordinary handling, and such as will exclude all insects and vermin. It is also true that such a packing thus applied will, with lnost if not all -articles which such glasses are designed to hold, prevent loss by leakage, since, the glass B being pressed, greater uniformity can be secured in its manufacture than With hand-m ade or blown articles, from Which it follows that a packing-ring thus employed will in all, or nearly all, cases, bear uniformly all around with the desired degree of tightness.
A packi ng-ring cylindrical in cross-section, or of other equivalent form, may be substituted for that shown, and even a rectangular ring may be arranged in a la't groove, so that its Outer .periphery shall bear against the sides of the mouth in like manner, and With a useful effect.
I claim herein as my invention- A jelly-glass consisting ofa tapering pressedglass vessel, B, having a mouth interiorly unreoessed, and a pressed-glass cap, A, the latter having an exterior rim to rest on the mouth of B, a flange, a, to go inside the mouth, With a groove or recess, c, in the exterior periphery of the flange, to receive and retain a packing-ring, c, the article as a Whole being substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM C. KING. Witnesses:
