To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN l/V. KENNEDY and BRADNER L. HARRIS, residents of Des Moines,in the county of Polk'and State of Iowa,
and of Pittsburg, county of Allegheny, State of Pennsylvania, respectively, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Jars or Fails; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description zo thereof. v
Our invention relates to casks or pals for eontainingbutter, preserves, sirups, duc., during transportation and while packed in the warehouse, its object being to provide a pail r 5 which is practically air-tight and one in which the liability of breakage during handling and transportation is largely overcome.
To these ends our invention consists, generally stat-ed, in a jarof glass, porcelain, or
zo other suitable material, the lid whereof is confined by a clamping-band secured thereto and engaging with the upper edge of said jar, and an auxiliary spring interposed between said clamping-band andthe upper surface of 2 5 said lid, said auxiliary springbeing arranged to be swung around with its ends at any ann gle to the clamping-band.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will describe the 3o same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of our improved jar within the outer casing or jacket. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the jar with the lid secured 3 5 thereto, the auxiliary spring being shown at right angles to the clamping-band.

The jar a is constructed of glass, porcelain, or other suitable material, which will have no c chemical effect to decompose or otherwise have any deleterious effects on the substance which it contains. This jar a is formed with the annular flange a around the upper edge thereof; or, if desired, a 4suitable number of lugs may be formed around the upper edge of the said pail at opposite points thereon. The lid b has secured at or about the center thereof the bolt b', and engaging with said bolt is the clamping-band c, said clamping- 5o band bein g formed with the inwardly-extending flanges c thereon, which act as catches to engage with the annular flange a surrounding the upper edge of the jar, thus hold ing said lid in position upon the jar. The clamping-band c, as stated, engages with the bolt b,4said bolt passing through an opening' in said clampingband and allowingacertain amount of play and movement of said band upon said bolt, a thumb-nut CZ holding said spring in engagement with said bolt.` 6o
Interposed between the clamping-band c and the upper face of the lid CZ is the auxiliary spring c, the curved portion of said auxiliary spring c engaging with the central portion c2 of the clamping-band c, and the ends 65 c of said auxiliary spring c pressing upon the upper surface ofthe lid b near the circumference thereof. From this manner of con-` Y. struction it will be apparent that the auxiliary spring c may be turned upon the bolt b', 7o so as to rest with its ends e at any angle with relation to the clamping-band c-as,\for instance, at right angles, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The jar a is formedwith the annular seat or recess f around the ,upper edge or mouth of said jar, and within said annular seat or recess is the rounded groove S', within which is secured thegasket g, said gasket being formed of some substance which will have 8o no tendency to in any way affect the purity of the substance contained within the pail. The lid b rests upon this gasket gwithin the annular recess f, said lid having the ilange 7L depending below the gasket g, thereby form- S 5 ing, in connection with the clamping-band and the axillary spring c and e, a very tight connection between said lid andthe pail, and one that is practically air-tight.'
The outer casing or jacket e' is constructed 9o of wood or any other suitable material, and within this the jar a is placed during transportation or for storage. Springsj are interposed between the sides and bottom of the jar a and the corresponding sides and bottorn of the outer casing or jacket z', these springsj being secured to the inner walls of the casing t', being secured thereto by the bolts or pins j passing through slots it in said springs, to allow for a certain amount of roo movement `on the part of-said springs during the insertion and fwithdrawal/of tlie jar v*from said casing. The lower ends of said springs j are bent up to form the bottom supports jg for the jar, as shown in Fig. 1. Vhen the jar 4is inserted within the casing, it is .apparent that it is held securely on all sides and on its end, Ithe clamping-band c serving to provide for its retention at the upper lend of the jacket fi. By this arrangement of the springs the casing may be inverted, as is often thecase during transportation, without aecting the position of the jar therein, while at the same time the clamping-band c serves as a handle for lifting the jar.
Another special advantage lies in the fact that as the jar is usually made of some fran- .gible material, when thelid has been removed and deposited on any support the springbands act as 'a :cushion and vprevent .liability of the breakage of the lid in handling.
