WATCH.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1919.
Application ld March 18, 1918. Serial No. 223,047.
To all lwhom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. DUNHAM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of'the borough of Brooklyn .of the city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vatches, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part hereof. l
This invention relates to the means for making a .water tight joint between the pendant of a stem-winding watch and the crown which carries the winding and setting stem, and it has for its object to provide simple and eii'ective means whereby the penetration of moisture within the watchcase about the winding and setting stem can be prevented. The invention will be more fully described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawing in which it is illustrated, and in which- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing a portion of a Watchcase with the pendant and crown, the crown being locked to the pendant.
Fig. 2 is a detail view in section showing the parts in the same position and showing the winding and setting stem in elevation.
Fig. 3 Vis a view similar to Fig. l, but showing the crown in its unlocked position and showing also the winding and setting stem.
Fig. 4 is a view in section on the plane indicated by the line 4--4 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 5 is a view in section on the plane indicated by the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
The watchcase center a is shown as having secured thereto a pendant b, angular in cross section, which carries an annular, overhanging bossor projection c which furnishes a seat for a packing ring d. Surrounding the pendant b, so as to slide but not to turn thereon is a ring e provided with hooked members f. The crown g has secured thereto, in any suitable manner, the usual winding and setting stem h, which extends down through the central aperture in the pendant b. It is provided with an annular recess z' to receive the packing ring d and it is also provided with ianges c which are tapered at one end, as shown at c, and are separated at their ends by a s ace k2 sufficient to permit the passage of t e overhanging ends of the hooked members f. The pendant b has also a sleeve b which is extended up within the crown g and into an annular recess g therein, to prevent the entrance of dust and moisture when the crown is pulled out.
The crown is applied to the pendant by positioning the spaces k2 in line with the -hooked members f and is then pressed toward the pendant and then turned so that the inclined ends c ofthe anges 7c pass under the overhanging ends of the hooked members f of the ring e, and so cause the crown to be turned down snugly against the packing ring d and to press'the same between the crown and the seat or boss c, the ring e being drawn yagainst the overhanging portion of the annular seat or boss c. When the crown is thus locked it cannot be rotated for winding or setting, but when either of these functions is to be performed, the crown is rotated slightly so as to release it from the hooked members of the ring e, which is spaced anges adapted to be engaged with said hooked members, said crown being adapted to make a tight joint with the pendant base.
.f 2. In awatch, the combination of a watchcase center, a pendant secured to the center and having an annular, overhanging boss, a ring mounted to slide between the center and the boss but not to turn on the pendant and Provided with hooked members, and a crown having spaced anges adapted to be engaged with said hooked members, said crown being adapted to make a tight joint with the pendant base.
This specification signed this 14th day of March, A. D. 1918.- l
' CHARLES A. DUNHAM.
