Application'fi-led'March 27, 1922, Se-ria1 Ne. 54-7,1-74.- Renewed Aprnio; 1925:
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LYXTOLNEY T. MILLER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jacksom and State of hlissouri, have inventeda-certa1n The attachment comprises an indicia-- *arrying member andmeans for securing-it to-the telephone,
Existing. telephone outfits each comprise a base. a standard, a telephone transmitter carried thereby c'onsistmg'ot asound box or usual hook upon which the receiver is hung. The sound casing: present-s considerable space on which indicia' may be placed but such space is not available on account of the objections raised by the'telephone com' panies for tampering with their apparatuses.
I' have provided means whereby a suitable indiciacarryingdiskcan'be attached to thetront of the sound box and secured thereto by means in sten'ed-to the edges of: the mouthpiece-receiving opening, and the-particularly novel manner by mean-s ot which-the attachment is made will be apparent by refer-- ence to the following description in connection with the accompanying drawings,- in which Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the upper portion off a telephone-outfit of known construction to which my invention is applied. Fig. 2 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section through the upper portion of the telephone outfit to which the invention is applied.
Fig. 3 is a disassociated view of the upper portion of the telephone outfit, the indioia carrying disk and the means for securing it to the sound box or casing, and
l is a detail view of a spanner wrench adapted to be used in connection with the invent-ion.
Referring now to the drawings by numerals of reference:
1 designates the post or standard of a telephone outfit to which is pivotally secured the sound box or casing 2, having a casing; and transmitter mouthpiece; and thefront cover-3 with" afiange 4 secured to' the box creasing: by the screws 5. The cover 3 is provided with a threadedcentral opening 6 tonormailly receive the threaded end 7 of the mouthpiece 8;-
The structure thus far describeclis-part of every telephone outfit generally employed.
The indicia-ca-rrying disk 9v is provided with a central opening 10; adapted to fit over the outstanding edge. or, flange 11. surrounding the opening 6. The disk is-pro videdwith an inturned bead- 12, which may be held to the peripheryof thegdisk 9 by bending. over the edgesthereof or'by any other appropriate manner.- The bead may consist ofa ring, and provided in the; edge thereofis a-notch 13 adapted tobeengagedby a stoplst- The stop maybe-anelongated 1 screw substituted for one of the screws 5,
asshown in Fig. Since the: head 12. is greater in diameter thanthe cap 3,.1t is obvious that the bead may fit: over the cap so that the notch 13 will be. engaged by. the
pin lt to prevent turning thereof with re spect to the soundlbon. or casing 2 In order to-clamp the-edge otthe opening 10- about the' outstanding'portion oi: flange 11 I provide asleeved collar 15, having a base flange 16 to rest against thedisk 9, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, the collar having an int-urned flange-or edge 17* against which the shoulder 18 on the clamping ringv 19 may. abut. 19 may pass throughthe opening-10. and'into the openingfi engaging the threaded edge thereof so that the parts ca nbe secureditogether by turning. thev ring. with a. suitable tool as tor exampleya spanner wrench 21', having a tooth 22 to engage in the hole or opening 23 in the ring 19.
The outer end of the ring 19 is provided with internal threads 24 to receive the threaded end 7 of the mouthpiece. 8. Therefore, when the ring 19 is secured in place to hold the sleeve 15 in contact with the disk 9 and the mouthpiece is screwed into the threaded portion 245, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the parts will be assembled, ready for use.
The disk will be held against outward movement and the engagement of the stop pin 1 1 with respect to the notch 13 will prevent rotative movement of the indicia-carrying disk. Therefore, when the disk is properly located, it will be held against relative movement with respect to the telephone The inner threaded end20 of the ring.
sound box and it will present its indiciacarrying face 25, which may be divided into separate panels or spaces to carry suitable in'dicia, such as information or advertising matter. The finished assembly will present the appearance as illustrated in Fig. 1.
The purpose of using the spanner wrench is to screw the ring in place to serve as a lock nut so that the disk cannot be surreptitiously removed and unless a spanner wrench similar to that shown in Fig. 4-, or other appropriate tool is available, there will be considerable difficulty encountered in removing the ring 19 to take oli the disk so that unauthorized removal of the disk will be made difiicult.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. In combination with the sound box of a telephone transmitter, a stop pin carried thereby, a disk having a rim overlapping the edge of the sound box and provided with a notch engaged by the stop, the disk having a central opening coaxial with the opening in the sound box, and means for clamping the disk about the edge of the opening in the sound box, said means also serving as a support for the mouthpiece of the telephone transmitter.
2. In combination, the sound box of a telephone transmitter provided with a central opening having internal threads in the edge thereof, a disk for contact with the sound box and having an opening co-axial with the opening in the sound box and of greater diameter than the first named opening, a clamping sleeve about the first and second mentioned openings, a clamping ring for engagement with the threads surrounding the opening in the sound box, said ring having an internally threaded end, and a telephone mouthpiece engaging the threaded end.
3. In combination, a telephone transmitter sound box having a central opening, the wall of the sound box surrounding the open ing havinginternal threads, a disk having a central opening and lying against the sound box, a clamping ring engaging the internal threads of the sound box and pro vided with a shoulder, a sleeve interposed between the shoulder and the disk, and a mouthpiece connected to the clamping ring.
4. In combination, a telephone transmitter sound box having a central opening, the wall of the sound box surrounding the opening having internal threads, a disk having a central opening and lying against the sound box, a clamping ring engaging the internal threads of the sound box and provided with a shoulder, a sleeve interposed between the shoulder and the disk, a mouthpiece connected to the clamping ring, and means for preventing rotation of the disk with respect to the sound box.
5. A telephone attachment comprising a disk having a central opening and an inwardly extending, peripheral bead having a notch for engagement with a stop in the sound box of a telephone, a sleeve having; an opening coinciding with the central opening in the disk, and a clamping ring having external threads at one end and integral threads at the other, the externally threaded end projecting through the sleeve and the opening in the disk to engage the sound box of the telephone and the internal threads of: the ring being adapted to be engaged by the mouthpiece of the telephone transmitter.
6. A telephone attachmentcomprising a disk having a central opening to coincide with the mouthpiece receiving opening in the telephone transmitter sound box, a clamping ring having an externally threaded. end to project through the opening in the disk and engage in the opening in the sound box. a clamping sleeve between the clamping ring and the disk, and internal threads on the ring for engagement with the mouthpiece oi a telephone transmitter, said ring having a spanner wrench engaging opening in the periphery thereof.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
VOLNEY T. MILLER.
