Description

March w32- L. F. HEERWAGEN GEAR SHIFT LEVER PICTURE KNOB Filed June 16, 1930 Patented Mar. 8, 1932 Y UNITED, sTAfTEs PATENT oFFicE LEO F. HEERWAGEN, OF FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS GEAR SHIFT LEVER PICTURE KNOB Application filed June 16,
hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part' of this specification Figure 1 represents a top plan view of the invention.
Fig. 2 represents a top plan view of the invention employing a slightly different shape of knob.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of a knob shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 represents a vertical sectional View through thelknob shown in Fig. l, taken substantially on the line @lf-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 represents a vertical sectional view through a slightly modified form of knob.
Figure 6 comprises disconnected views of the parts comprised in the embodiment illustrated in Figuresl to 4, inclusive.
Referring tothe drawings wherein like numerals designate like part s,' it will be seen that numeral 5 represents the usual threaded upper end of the gear shift lever yof an automobile. -Numeral @represents the knob body provided with a circumferentially extending grip iange 7.
The upper end of the knob 6 is also provided with an outwardly disposed flange 8 which has an inwardly curved rim 9 thereon. Numeral 10 represents the lens for disposition upon the picture ll while numeral 12 represents the spring split ring which can be snapped to a position within the confines of the rim 9 to prevent displacement of the i lens 10. Y
Fig. 5 discloses a slightly modified form ofl knob wherein numeral 6 represents the knob body rovided with the circumferential fiange The upper 4portion' ofrthe body 6 is externally threaded for disposition with in the internally threaded sleeve 8. The upper end of this sleeve 8 is provided with an inwardly disposed transversely tapered rim 9 for engaging the lens 10 and retaining the same against the picture 1l. A
1930. seran No. 461,496.
Fig. l represents the knob of circular outline7 whereas Fig. 2 represents the same in a polygonal outline. f
It will be understood from the foregoing that each embodiment of my invention includes a knob characterized by spaced cir-v cumferential fianges, and also characterized by the utilization of the outermost flange to Ysurround and frame and thereby embellish a picture retained in the knob, the picture being interposed between the knob body. and a rim on the outermost fiange, and being arranged at the inner side of a protective lens which is also interposed between the said rim andthe body. Manifestly the two spaced flanges of the knob enable an operator to readily take secure hold of the knob.
lVhile the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in detail, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size, and 0 materials may be resorted to without departf ing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is A knob adapted for attachment to a gear shift lever and characterized by spaced circumferentially arranged Hanges, one flange adjacent to the 4'outer end of the knob and having an inwardly extending rim spaced 30 from the knob portion Within the rim, a picture arranged against said knob portion, a lens arranged at the outer side of the picture, both picture and lens'disposed between said rim and the knob portion within the rim, L and a split spring ring within said rim holding the picture and lens in place. lIn testimony whereof I afIix my signature.
LEQ F. HEERWAGEN.
