Description

I 7A. BENEmcT. Carriage-Pole Tip.
i lPa't'nid May 12, 1868.
A'LONZO BENEDICT, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
Lemm Patent Na. 77,796, (ma May 12, 1868,.
IMPROVEMENT IN GARRIAGE-POLE 4TIP 'dla dgthnlz mam ta ia these ttfltrs lantt zmh mtkingtttt the start. w
TO ALL WHOM IT. MAY CONCERN.:
Be it known that I, ALoNzo BENEDIGT, of Albany, in the county of Albany, and State of New York, have inventeda new and useful Improi'ement in Pole-Tips; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable ot'herslskilled in the lart to make and use the same, reference being had to the aecompanying drawing, forming` part of this speeifieation, in which the drawing represents a side view of my invention. i
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. t
The object of this invention is to provide a metallic tip for the tongues or poles of carriages, which will not strain the leather of the neck-yokc' to so great a degree, nor distort the same to so great an extent as the pole-tips heretofore used, and vwhich will enable a lighter and ineater neck-yoke leather to be used. 'The invention consists iniforming the tip with a. socket, A, into which the tapered end of the 'pole i) fits with snug contact, and a curved part, B, which curves 'abruptly from 'the socket A; and-.lthereby forms a con'` care surface, b Z), against which the leather-eye C of the neck-yoke str-ap E C impinges, in' the act of holding back and in holding up the pole. w
By-means of this invention the part B may be made much smalle'r than are the eorresponding parts of poletips as usually made, for the socket A being of a suitable size tonreceive the end of the pole, the part B may be made' much smuller than thcrsocket, without impairing the efliciency o'f the tip. i
The reduced size of' the part B enables a smaller and neater eye to be employed, and as'the strain is' directly in the plane of the said eye, the undesirablc toi'sion strain which conduces to breaking the stitches of neck-yoke straps, and wearing out the same, is avoidecl. w
The eye can also be made'smaller, and located nearer to the neek-yoke D than is permissible with the tips as heretofore made.
The tip is formed ofca-st metal or malleable iron, and`is of small cost. A screw,' a, may be employed to secure the tip upon the pole.l i
Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A pole-tip, A B, snbstantially as and for the pui'posey described.
'The above specification of my invention signed byfme, this 23d day of March, 1868.
A. BENEDICT.
