TO. ALL WHOM IT` MAY CONGERN: y
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN FfCADY, of Chittenango, in-.the county of Madison; and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Sleigh-Knees; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andvexact description of the construction and operationof the same, reference being h ad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification', and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The objectof my invention is to construct a sleigh-knee that shall he more simplel'in construction and more permanently useful than any similar device heretofore known.
To tbisfend, I first construct a rod of4 malleable or wrought iron, in the form shown by the letter A of the drawings. The lower end of' this rod passes through and ismade fast to the sleigh-runner, and theupper end passesthrough the top cross-piece and bottom board of the sleigh-body. The-sleigh-runner is represented by the letter B, the top cross-piece by C, and the bottom board by D, on the drawings.
Y Atthe top of the bottom board, I cut a threadon the rodA, and adjust to it a nut, as shown. This thread and nut'are shown at E. The lower end of rod A is made fast in the sleigh-runner by means of a head, G, bearing upward Vagainst a shoulder in said runner. I
It will readily be perceived that by means of saidtheadG and lthe nt and screw E, the operator can tighten the rod at will, and may removeit altogether with great ease.`
In order to protect said rod A, to give additional strengthA to the same, and-furnish suitable bearings for the runner and cross-piece, I construct a shield, marked H on the drawings, which fully insures to the knee all the benets named. The llanches a a clasp the upper side of the runner, and the flanches c c clasp the lower` side of the cross-piece. At the point 0,I leavean opening in the shield, for the insertionA of a screw, by means of which the shield is always held firmly, and prevented from either a forward or backward movement under the cross-piece. For the purpose of cheap and rapid manufacture, I usually construct the shield H of cast iron. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
. A sleigh-knee having rod'A and shield H, constructed, combined, and arranged, substantially asdescribed,
as a new article of manufacture.
