TEMPORARY BINDER.
APPLIUATIONIILED AUG 27, 1903.
N0 MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented November 29, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
TEMPORARY BINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 775,918, dated. November 29, 1904.
Application filed August 27, 1903. Serial No. 170,979. (No model.)
To a whom, it Hui/y concern:
Be it known that I, J GEN A. GREENE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prophetstown, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of devices commonly known as temporary binders adapted ordinarily for use in libraries or like places for holding magazines or other periodicals while the same are being extensively used by readers. The holder, however, is also advantageous for private use, as well as in the above-mentioned capacity, being principally designed to protect flexible covers of the articles disposed therein from the wear and tear consequent to continuous use of this class of articles.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.
While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanyin drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a temporary binder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view, the cover portion of the binder being broken away. Fig. 3
is a detail view of the supporting-stay carried by the back of the binder. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing one of the pivoted carriers or holders having a modified form of clamp device applied thereto. Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective view of one of the clamp-bars.
The binder consists of the usual covers 1- and back portion 2. Secured upon the inner side of the back 2 is the supporting-stay 3, which is affixed to this part of the binder by any suitable means, in this instance being held thereupon by means of an inner layer of cloth material 4. The stay 3 is provided with upturned terminal portions 5, which constitute supporting-flanges to which carriers or holders 6 are pivoted. The terminal flanges 5 are provided with openings which receive journals 7, projected from the corresponding end portions of the holders 6. The holders 6 may be of any number dependent upon the number of periodicals to be carried in a single binder, and each of the carriers 6 is provided with upturned edge portions or longitudinal flanges 8, which embrace the periodicals secured to the holder upon opposite sides of the rear portion thereof. The books socured within the binder are held upon the car" riers 6 by means of a pivoted clamp-bar 9 in the preferable form of the binder, the said bar being secured at one end of the carrier by means of links 10, so as to permit a pivotal movement thereof. The opposite end of the clamp-rod is notched, so as to be engaged by a hook carried by corresponding links 10, disposed upon the carrier to hold the clamp-rod in position after the same has been disposed between the leaves of the book which is to be secured to the said carrier.
In the modified form of carrier shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings a spring 11, carried by one of the flanges 8 of the carrier 6, is adapted to bear against one side of the book to thereby clamp the same to the carrier. Either of the forms of clamp devices shown is adapted to secure different-sized books to the carrier or carriers, such as the case maybe.
It will be understood that within the contemplation of my invention 1 am not limited to the specific form of pivoted means shown in the drawings, but may pivotall y mount the carriers in any manner suitable for the purpose of the invention.
The supporting-stay 2 serves in the capacity of astifl'ening means for the back of the binder as well as a means for mounting the pivoted carrier 6.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a temporary binder, the combination with posed upon the pivoted carriers to secure the a supporting-stay disposed upon and extendarticle thereby. ing the length of the back of the binder and in testimony WhereofI dflIlX my signature in provided with upturned terminals, carriers presence of two Witnesses. 5 journaled upon the supporting-stay aforesaid, JOHN A. GREENE. [L. s.
