OIL-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 775,762, dated November 22, 1904. Application filed December '7, 1903. Serial No. 184.127. k'No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER JOHN OBRIEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beloit, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved hydrocarbon or oil burner adapted for use in providing heat for hot-air furnaces, stoves, hot-water heaters, steam-boilers, and the like; and it consists in the construction and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinally-central section of the burner embodying my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional View of the same.
In the embodiment of my invention I provide a generator or retort l, which is preferably a casting and is formed integrally with a gas-chamber 2 on its under side, depending therefrom. The upper portions of the sides 3 of the gas-chamber extend directly down- Ward from the sides of the generator or retort, and they then extend outwardly, as at 4, and then downwardly, as at 5, so that the lower portion of the gas-chamber is wider and longer than the upper portion thereof. The gas-chamber is provided with a bottom plate 7 on its under side, which closes the same, and is provided in its side walls with openings 6.- The bottom plate is provided with openings 8 of suitable size, which are suitably spaced apart and in the lower ends of which are depending mixing-tubes 9, the lower ends of which are enlarged or flared, as shown. A longitudinal bore 10 is made through the generator or retort and forms a chamber therein for converting liquid hydrocarbon into gas. This bore or chamber is in practice provided With a lining-tube of porous carbon. (Shown at 11 and described and claimed in Letters Patent of the United States No. 741,920, granted to me October 20, 1903.)
The oil-feed tank 12 is provided with a feed- 7 from the bottom plate 8.
' pipe 13, which isconnected to one end of the 5 bore, chamber, or passage of the generator or retort and is provided with a controlling-valve 14. From the opposite end of the bore, chamber, or passage of the generator or retort extends a pipe 15, which bends down- Wardly, as at 16, and is bent horizontally, as at 17, the said horizontal portion thereof being disposed under and at a suitable distance The said horizontal portion of the pipe is provided with a series of burner openings or jets 18,which register with the mixing-tubes 8 and discharge jets of gas through the latter into the gaschamber. It will be understood that the air is also supplied to 4 the gas chamber 5 through the said tubes 9 and that the air becomes commingled with the gas in such proportions as to permit active combustion of the gas in the gas-chamber. The flames issue from the latter through the openings 6. Since 7 the retort or generator is directly above the gas-chamber and since the latter is provided in its sidewalls with openings through which the flames issue, it will be understood that the retort is heated on its under side and at its sides, so that it is rendered highly efiicient in converting the oil fed thereto into gas. Below the gas-chamber is a drip-pan 19, which forms a support for the burner and is provided at one side with an u pwardly-extend- 8O ing wall 20, attached to one side of the gaschamber. On the upper side of the retort, which is semicylindrical in shape, is placed a spreader 21, which comprises a base portion 22, adapt- 5 ed to fit on the upper side of the retort, and a hood 23, the sides of which project outwardly and are curved upwardly from the base portion, as shown. This spreader may within the attached to the retort or detachable therefrom. From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be scope of my invention be either permanently 9 2 inlet openings in the bottom, and a burnerpipe leading from the retort, extending under the gas-chamber and having jet devices to discharge upwardly into the gas-chamber through the openings in the bottom thereof, substantially as described.
