OIL-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,015, dated January 20, 1891.
Application filed August 30, 1890'- Serial No. 363,473- (No model.) I
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Warren, in the county of Warren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and use ful Oil-Burner, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in oil-burners in which petroleum is used for the purpose of generating vapor and utilizing the same for heat.
My invention is disclosed in the following specification and claims, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of the entire oil-burner; Fig. 2, a side View; Fig. 3, a vertical section of a portion of the oil-burner on a line 1 2, Fig. 2;.Fig. 4, a top view of the retort and the case; Fig. 5, a top View of the plate and its openings; Fig. 6, a top view of the burner.
Similar letters refer to similar parts through out the several views.
The retort A, the case B, nut G, and pipe D, adapted to the pipe H, which is connected to the burners F F F by means of the pipes G G, all of which are supported by the frame E, constitute the frame-work of the entire oil-burner. The retort A is hollow, and has opening a, threaded for the reception of the pipe H, opening 1), threaded for an extra burner, and opening 0, threaded for the insertion of the pipe'I and referred to hereinafter. The case B has straight sides and ends of equal height, and a flat bottom with an opening d for the reception of the pipe H. The retort A is inserted in the case B, forming an opening r, which protects the retort A from direct heat. The pipe D rests upon the top of plate E and extends to the nut C, incasing a portion of the pipe I-l, protecting the pipe II from direct heat. ThepipeI-I is connected to the pipes G G (see Fig. 3) and passes vertically up through the opening 61 in plate E, thence through pipe D, and (being threaded from the bottom of the nut C to the top) is adapted to the nut Oand opening a in retort A, into which it is inserted to a point near the opening I), as in Fig. 3. The pipes G G are attached to the lower end of the pipe H, and the burners F F F are cup-shaped, with openings 6 e 6, also flanges 'i 2' i, and adapted to the plate E, which is provided with openings h h h, (adapted to the burners F F F,) also opening (Z, through which the pipe H is inserted.
In operating the oil-burner the petroleum is flowed through the pipe I into the retort A, and a fire is then kindled upon the plate E, directly under the case B, causing the petroleum to vaporize, and the vapor escapes through the pipes H G G, thence through the openings e e e in the burners F F F, where it ignites and produces heat sufficient to assure a continuous generation of vapor for heating purposes, provided the retort A is replenished with petroleum from time to time.
I prefer to show the position of the oil burner as it would appear in the fire-box of a boiler m with the plate E supported by flanges r r 1' of the boiler m, and also by a brick wall t, which prevents the draft from passing under and back of the plate E (see Figs. 1 and 2) and forms an air-chamber beneath the plate for supplying air to the burners.
I am aware that prior to my invention oilburners have been made with various burners which vaporize petroleum for heating purposes, operating in conjunction with receptacles for holding petroleum. I therefore do not claim such a combination, broadly; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a vaporizing hydrocarbon-burner, the combination, with the supporting-plate, of the burners located therein, having air-inlets communicating with the open air below said plate and their discharge ends above said plate, substantially as described.
2. In a hydrocarbon-burner, the combina tion, with the supporting-plate, of the burners located therein, having air-inlets'below said plate, and the draft-check below the plate and forming therewith a closed airchamber, substantially as described.
3. In a hydrocarbon-burner, the combination, with the supporting-plate adapted to be placed in the tire-box of a steam-boiler, of the burners located therein and supported thereby, the generating-chamber, and the pipes connecting it with the burners, whereby said burners and chamber and their connections pipe betweeu thesupportingzplate and shield are supported by said plate, substantially as for the generating-chamber, substantially as 10 described. described.
