GEORGE H. LUMB, OF PAWTUUKET, RHODE ISLAND.
UNDERGARIVIENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 775,086, dated November 15, 1904.
Application filed July 15, 1904. Serial No. 216,676- No niodcld To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. LUMB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Undergarments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in undergarments, particularly for infants; and the purpose of the same is to provide an undershirt which shall have a variable neck-opening, a double thickness throughout the entire front and additional protection between the shoulder-blades, and a diaper-tab for the attachment of a diaper.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention, Figure 1 being a front View of the undershirt, the position of parts in this figure being that which they occupy when the shirt is on the infant; Fig. 2, a sectional view through :1 .z' of Fig. 1.
In Fig. 1, I) is the back of the garment, shown as toward the spectator. c is the intermediate layer, and (1/ the front, knitted at the edges to o. The parts (a, I), and c constitute the body of the shirt, the parts a. and a forming a double closed front and the part 7) forming a closed back. The parts a and c are united together and to the back I) at the edges, and suitable sleeves are attached to the shirt in the usual or in any desired manner. The shirt being closed both in front and back, it is necessary that the neck opening be made larger than where the shirt is open in the front or in the back, and this enlarged opening is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings being bounded by the upper edge of the inner layer 0 of the front of the garment and the upper edge of the back I) of the shirt, the former edge being shown partly in full and partly in dotted lines and the latter edge being shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. Pendent from cand a part thereof is the tab (3, forming a suitable support, to which a diaper may be pinned. Integral with the front a are the flaps a 0, adapted to be brought over from the front to the back and there secured by a safety-pin (Z.
The dotted lines in Fig. I show the flaps before adjustment and the full lines It a the same when adjusted to the wearer. The opening between 7) and c at the top of the garment is made nearly as large as the body of the garment, the neck adjustment being effected wholly by means of the flaps u a.
In putting the garment on the infant the flaps u. u are raised above the top of the shirt to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and the head of the infant is passed through the neck-opening. The flaps u u" are then folded down on the back of the shirt one over the other and secured together by a safety-pin (Z, as shown in the full linesin Fig. 1. These flaps also give an increased thickness of protection to that portion of the hollow of the back which is most sensitive to cold.
I do not use buttons or buttonholes to secure the flaps 1/ It, as this would defeat the principal object which the flaps are designed to accomplished: but by the use of a safetypin or its equivalent the flaps may be adjusted so as to provide an opening of any size desired.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A garment having a closed back and a closed front, said front being formed of two layers. one of said layers terminating in flaps adapted to be brought about the neck and secured together over the back.
2. An undershirt comprising a body part and sleeves, the body part having a closed back and a closed front. the front consisting of two layers, one of said layers or thicknesses being provided with curved flaps on its upper end adapted when the garment is in position on the wearer to be secured together one over the other on the outside of the back of the shirt.
In testimony whereof I atiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
