AUXILIARY SEAT FOR VEHICLES.r
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 773,08,"dated'october 25, 1904. Appucaunied .ingest 10,1904. serial No. 220,239.' (No model.)
To all whom t may concern: v v
Be it known that I, PETER W. MINOR, a resident of Batavia, in the county of Genesee and State of N ew-York, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Auxiliary Seats for Vehicles; andI do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to' make and use the same.l
'My invention relates to an improved auxiliary seat for vehicles, the object of the'in-V vention being to provide an improved seat of this character which will be supported on a vehicle-seat between two persons or between the legs of one person and occupy no additional space, but provide an additional seat.
A further object is to provide improvements of this character in which the seat hinges at its center, permitting a person beside the same to get out of or into the vehicle without inconvenience, and the device is of simple inexpensive construction and can be folded and placed in the ordinary seat-box or other part of the vehicleand be out of the way when not desired.-
VVith these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figurel is a view in perspective, illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section. Fig. 3 is a top plan view with seatcover removed, and Fig. 4is a view in horizontal section. Y
l representsa sheet-metal standard, preferably corrugated to strengthen the same and bent at its ends around hinge-pins 2, which extend at both ends beyond standard l and to which are connected the seat 4 and base 3.
The seat 4 comprises twowings,.preferably of the shape shown, having ltongues 5 and 64 bent around the protruding ends of upper hinge-pin 2, and each wing has an inclined .bracing-lip 7 to bear against the standard l and'shoulders 8 'are struck from standard l to limit the movement of lips 7.
The base 3 is constructed precisely like seat 4, above described, save that its lips7 project upward instead of downward,'as do the lips 7 of the seat.
The seat 4 is preferably provided with a suitable cover and padded in any approved manner. l
It will be seen that with my improvements the seat can be located between two persons without taking up any extra space, and either or both wings of the seat can be swung upward to permit either or both persons easy exit from the vehicle. The seat may also be located between the legs of a person and when not desired for use can be folded into small compass and placed in the seat-box or elsewhere, as may be desired.
AAs the wings of both the seat and base are alike, thev expense of manufacture is reduced to a minimum and can be placed on the market at a comparatively small cost.
A great many slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I would have it undercise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairlyfall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A seat, comprising a standard, and seat and base wings hinged to the opposite ends thereof.
2. A seat, comprising a standard, seat and base wings hinged to the opposite ends thereof, and lips on said wings to bear against the standard and hold the wings in horizontal po- ...sition. '3. A'seat, comprising a standard, hingepins at the ends thereof, wings hinged on said pins, and inclined lipson said wings adapted to engage the sides of ythe standard to support the wings in horizontal position.
4. A seat, comprising a standard, a seat comprising two Wings hinged to the upper end of the standard, and a. hase comprising two wings hinged to the lower end thereof.
5. A seat, comprising a Sheet-metal standard, hinge-pins around which the ends of the standard are bent, seat nd base wings, tongues thereon bent around the hinge-pins, brace-lips on the wings to engage the sides of the standard and hold the wings at an angle thereto, and Shoulders on the standard to limit the movement of the lips thereagainst.
6. A seat, comprising a base, a standard secured thereto, and zi Sent Connected to said standard and consisting ol2 two lml-sootione hinged to the standard and both :ulupted to he swung upward.
In testimony whereofl lnwe signed this Specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PETER W. MINOR.
