- Letters .Patent .No.77,189 datati April 28, 1868.
l.IMPROi7lil1llIENT IN GLOTHDRAWERS.
TO ALL WHOM ITMAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I', HENRYHEATH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Article of Under-Clothing known as Cloth Drawers, and that the following is u.I
full, clear, and exact description and speciiication of my said invention.
The object of my invention is to get rid, in drawers of woven cloth, of the excess of material inthe vicinity.v
ofthe knees ofthe wearer, and to approximate the form of the leg oi'drawers made of woven cloth to the for-m of the human leg. To this end my invention consists of the combination of a waistband, depressed or pointed in front, so ,as to set close to l,the belly of the wearer, with a leg formed of woven cloth, seamed at the back of the knee, so that the excess of material at that place can be removed, to any desired extent, by sloping oii one' or both the edges of the cloth that are united by the said rear seam.
My invention `consists, further, of the combination of a leg of woven cloth, constructed with a rear seam, as.
above set forth, with an ankle-band, or band at the lower end of the said leg, to sustain the strain of the tape or other means by which the drawers-legs are fastened in the vicinity of the ankles of theA wearer.
My inventionconsists, further, of the combination of'the said leg. of` woven cloth, constructed with a rear seam, as above set forth, with both -the pointed waistband and thle ankle-band, so that the samearticle combines the advantageous propertiesl ofthese three constructions.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I have represented in the accompanying drawings, and will describe, a pair of mcns drawers, in which my said inventionis embodied in thc best mode which I havethus far devised.
-Figure 1 is a front view of the drawers, iiatted, as they appear afterironing.
Figure 2 is a rear view of the same; and
Figure 3 is a planof the cloth'cut'for forming one of the'le'gs of the said drawers.-
I prefer to cut thetmaterial for forming each drawers-leg in two pieees,A B, and in the form represented at iig. 3. One of these pieces, A, is of about suihcient width tolform threequarters of the periphery` ofthe drawers-leg, one o? its edges corresponding in position with a line drawn down the back of the legof the wearer. The second piece, B, is of about suiiicient width to vform the remaining quarter of the periphery ,of the leg. Hen-ce, when these two pieces a'resewed together by their edges, a a, b 6,13. seam, C, iig. 2, will be formed directly in the rearof theleg, and, eonsequently, a portion of the seam,- at e, will be in the rear of the kneeof the wearer.
In order to avoid the customary surplus of material 'found at the knees ofordinary cloth drawers, the edges, 'a a, b I1, oi' the two pieces of cloh of which the leg is formed are sloped oi in the vicinity of the knee, or from -c to c, iig. 3. Hence, whenthe two pieces .are seamed together, the drawers-leg approiiimates in form to that of the human leg, its dimensions gradually reducing from the rump to the knee, at e, thenswelling out below the knee,- to suit the calf of the leg, and, lastly, tapering .again as the leg approaches the position of the ankle;
The edges ofthe cloth, which form `the seam @,are sloped oifat the top and bottom, as at d d, ff', and an additional triangular portion is removed, as amg, fig. 3, at the top of the leg, so as to reduce the dimensions of the legin the vicinity of the waistband and the ankle. .f I
The waistband H, with which the legs A 'B are combined by sewing, is cut pointed in front, so thattho seam z corresponds approximately with the outline of the belly below the waist of the wearer, buttonz' z' and button-holesis .s s s being used to close the opening at the front, and the front upper corner of each leg is sloped off, as at r, iig. 3, to t it to the curvature of the waistband.
Each leg has at its lower end an ankle-band, which is scwed to the cloth of the leg, and strengthens it, so that it will sustain the strain of the ankle-fastening.-
The ankle-fastening'which prefer to use is a buckle, K, and a strap, L, .and I nd it convenient'to form a hole, a, in the ankle-band, to permit the passage of the end of the strap, L, from the inner to the outer side of the band,.before said strap is buckled.
Cloth drawers constructed with a seam at the rear of the knee, as above desoribed,'l,denominete fashioned 'cloth drawers, because their form is fashioned to that of. the human leg.
vWhat-I claim as my invention, ond-desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a pointed waistband with e cloth leg, constructed with n seamot the rear of the knee,
` lsubstenially as before setforth.
Iimitatedwaistband and an ankle-band, substantiallyns before eet ioxjth,
Also, the combination ofthe drawers-leg, 'constructed with e seam ot the rear' of the kneeond e band at the lower endof the leg, substantinlly es before set forth.
Also, the combination of the 'drawers-leg, constructed with a, seam atfthe reen-of' 'the knee, with both'a In testimony wheeof, I have hereto set my hend,'this fifteenth day. of Febrna'ry, A. 1341868.
