Description

UNITED STATES PATENT'OFFIGE.
ROBERT B. JACOBS, OF QUINCY, ILLINOIS.
IM PROVEMENT IN GAlTER-BOOTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,399, dated November 6, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, R. B. J AGOBS, of Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Gaiter- Boot; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of gaiter-' admit the foot. The surplus or flap folds within itself, and the strap passes around the back side of the ankle and buckles as tight as may be desired.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved gaiter. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear view, showing the buckle. Fig. 4 is a view showing the upper edge of the leather and buckle.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
A represents the upper or front of my gaiterboot, out and crimped in the common way as for boots. B is the counter, also out in common form. C is the back, also cut in the common manner, and stitched up to the front upon .one side, in the ordinary way.
Upon the inside I cut and fit a gored flap,
' 1), which is stitched to the front A and back 0, the said flap extending down to nearly a point, and terminating at the top of the counter near the front. The object and purpose of the said flap D is to allow sufficient space to admit the foot-into the gaiter.
At the inside seam where the back and front are joined is stitched in a wide strap, E, which extends to the top of the boot or gaiter, and tapers from the back down to within a short distance of the front.
F is a buckle attached to the outside of the gaiter, near the top of the leg, so that when the boot is on the foot the gore is folded up and the strap E is brought around the back side of the ankle and secured in the buckle F, so that it may be made to fit an ankle of any size as closely as desired, and forming a water-tight gaiter to the top.
The advantages of cutting the strap E in such a form as to-receive a buckle are apparent from the fact that it will fit any size of ankle, while those that are made to hook or are secured by hooks and eyes are confined to a particular size, therefore not suitable for the retail trade.
My improved gaiter is made in such a manner as to resemble a boot.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the gore D on one-side, the buckle F on the other side, and the strap E, passing around the back from the gore to the buckle, all as herein shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
ROBERT B. JACOBS.
