PATENTED OCT. 4, 1904-.
H. R. SIMONDS. BED PLATE FOR PAPER AND RAG ENGINES.

UNITED STATES Patented October 4, 1904.
PATENT OEEIcE.
BED-PLATE FOR PAPER AND RAG ENGINES- SPECIFICATION f rm ng p r of L r P e N 771,582, dated October 4, 1904.
Application filed April 24, 1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERBERT R. SIMoNDs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Plates for Paper and Rag Engines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v V
My invention relates to that class of bedplates in which the blades are so arranged as to form several series of diamond shaped knives; and it has for its special object to provide means whereby this result may be obtained without the use of the old dovetailing feature, which in practice has been found to weaken the blades.
. My invention consists in the novel construction fully and clearlycdescribed and illustrated in the accompanying specification and drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved bed-plate. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the blades employed in my device.
' A in the drawings represents a frame of suitable shape, size, and material adapted to inclose a series of blades B, bent into a zigzag form and so arranged that the external angles of adjacent blades are in contact with each other, thus forming a series of diamondshaped recesses between each pair of blades, the construction of the blades being such that a perpendicular line we dropped from one of the sides of the frame will pass through but one of the points of contact of the blades.
Serial No. 154,173. (No model.)
C C are blocks, preferably of wood, adapted to fit into said diamond-shaped recesses and also in the recesses formed betweenthe blades and said frame A to prevent all chance of the blades slipping. D D D are bolts provided with nuts D D, passing through said frame, blades, and blocks and adapted to hold the same rigidly together. In the drawings the apexes of the exterior angles of the blades have been illustrated as being pointed; but, if desirable, they may be flattened to insure greater rigidity. Hence it is evident that this construction will have all the qualities of the old dovetailed plate with the advantage of being much stronger and durable.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described diamond bed-plate for paper and rag engines, comprising among its members, a plurality of separate blades bent into Zigzag form and arranged with the external angles of adjacent plates in contact with each other, whereby two series of substantially continuous parallel cutting edges are provided, the cutting edges of one series crossing those of the other series angularly, the construction of said blades being such that not more than one of the points of contact of the plates will be in a perpendicular line dropped from one side of the frame, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HERBERT R. SIMONDS.
