TOBACCO-PLUG SHAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,559, dated December 5, 1899.
Application liled August 8, 1899. Serial No. 726,539. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may 0mg/cern,.-
Be it known that we, JOHN H. CHESHIRE and WILLIAM B. Simoon, citizens of the United States, residing at Winston, in the county of Forsyth and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Plug Shapers; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. l
Our invention relates to shapes for plugtobaceo; andthe object is to improve the construction and increase the efficiency and durability of 'the shape.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several elements of the shape, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a bottom perspective view of a sinker-frame embodying ourinvention. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the cellular mold-frame. Fig. 3 is a top perspective view of the einher-frame. F-ig. 4 is a longitudinal section of a series of the sinker and mold frames as they would appear in the press. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the same.
In the drawings, l denotes the sinlierframe, provided with the handles 2 2, and 3 denotes the usual mold-frame, provided with the cells et 4. y
The sinker-frame l consists of the parallel handrails 2 2, to which are fixed a series of transverse plates 5 5 of a width a triiie less than the length of the plugs, which conform in length and width to the mold-cells 4 4. These plates are separated by intervening spaces 6 6, and each plate is provided with a longitudinal series of parallel slots 7 7, as shown. The top faces of the plates are provided with a series of follower-blocks S 8 and the bottom faces of the plates with a corresponding series of sinkers or plungers 9 9.
l0 l0 denote the rivets which secure the follower-blocks to the plates, and l2 l2 corresponding rivets, which secure the plungers to said plates. It will thus be seen that the op` posed ends of both the follower-blocks and plungers are separated by the open spaces 6 6 and their parallel sides by the slots 7 7, and by reference to the sectional figures it will be seen that the edges of the followerl blocks and plungers project over the spaces 6 and the slots 7, so as to prevent dirt and foreign mat-- ter accumulating at these points and pressed in with the tobacco,as would be the casein that class of shapes in which the plate is formed of a solid piece.
It will of course be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction maybe resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a plug-tobacco frame comprising the parallel hand-.rails 2 2, the transverse independent plates 5 5 fortned with the longitudinal parallel slots 7 7, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a plug-tobacco frame comprising the parallel hand-rails, the independent trans verse plates formed with a series of longitudinal parallel slots 7 7; in combination with the follower-blocks 8 8 and the plungers 9 9 which latter exceed in length the width of the transverse plates and are of'a greater width than the solid portion of said plates between said parallel slots, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a plug-tobacco frame comprising the Yparallel hand-rails and the transverse independent plates formed with the longitudinal parallel slots, the follower-blocks which eX- ceed in length the width of said plates and are wider than the solid portion of the plates between said slots, and the plungers of uniform length and Width as the said follower-blocks, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a plug-tobacco frame, the parallel side rails and the independent transverse plates;
in combination with the follower-blocks and om` hands in presence of two subscribing Witplungex's, and the rivets 10 and l2 connecting nesses.
the blocks and plates and plungers and plates respectively, said follower-blocks and plungersbengseparated longitudinallyand trans Versely, substantially as und for the purpose 'Vit'nesses:
set forth. f R. W. PFAFF, In testimony whereof We have hereunto sets J. W. BROCK.
