Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 8, 1915.
Application filed April 17, 1914. Serial No. 832,608.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENDRIK CHRIs'rIAAN Roos, a citizen of the Netherlands, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Embossing-Mapropriately formed recesses to which the 1 scoring rules may be adjustably secured for simultaneous action, with the embossing plate whereby book covers for example may bescored and embossed at a single operation.
The invention in the preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the improved bed plate, showing the embossing die and scoring rules in place thereon. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken through one of the slots of the bed plate.
' In carrying out the improvement, I provide bed plate 1 on which the embossing die 2 is secured in any usual or preferred manner with a series of parallel slots 3. These slots open through the upper surface of the platel in the form of narrow rectangular openings, the lower portions of the slots being laterally extended so that they open through the bottom of the plate in increased transverse dimensions, as at 4. -The slots thus present a T-form in cross section.
With the embossing die secured to the bed plate in the usual manner, I contemplate affixing scoring rules .5, one or more as may be necessary to such bed plate through the medium of bolts 6-having heads 7 provided with the usual kerf, the bolts passing through the scoring rules with the head fitting below the operative edges of the rules and between them as illustrated. The threaded end of the bolt engages a nut 8 seating in the head portion of the slot.
The scoring rules are arranged transversely of the slots, that is each rule extends over all of the employed slots and is preferably secured in the manner described in each.
The slots 3 are of such length asto accommodate a plurality of rules if desired, or to permit the cooperation of one rule and its adjustment with relation to the adjacent die as may be desired to properly locate the scoring rules.
In use, by the proper positioning of one or more of the scoring rules as may be neces sary, the book cover or the like being embossed may be simultaneously scored for folding, thereby determining at a single operation what has previously required two. it is of course understood that the bed plate may be provided with slots 3 at different points in order to provide for any desired location of the scoring rules, the arrangement of the slots beingnot material in the present invention.
While I have shown and described the slots as arranged for horizontal adjustment of the scoring rules, it is obvious that they may, within the spirit of the invention be arranged for vertical adjustment when the rules are so used, and I do not deem it necessarv to illustrate this detail, as it is obvious.
What is claimed is 1. A bed plate for embossing machines formed with a plurality of parallel slots having head enlargements and a pair of scoring rules lying in parallelism and having relative adjustment, each of said rules having its face formed with a pair of parallel scoring edges, bolts passing through said rules and slots, and ends cooperating with the bolts and seated in the headed enlargements for securing said rules in any of their adjustments.
2. A bed plate for embossing machines formed with a plurality of parallel slotshaving head enlargements and a pair of scoring rules lying in parallelism and having relative adjustment, each of said rules having one face centrally depressed throughout the length thereof so as to form a pair testimony whereof I affix my' signature' of spaced scoring edges, bolts passing in presence of two Witnesses.
through said rules and slots, and ends .00- HENDRIK CHRISTIAAN ROOS. operatingv with the bolts and seated in the 'Witnessesz V 5 headed enlargements for securing said rules I ADAM SIEMONS,
in any of their adjustments. PETER'JAOKOWSVKI.
