HENRY KIRCH, OF SANTA ROSA, CALIFORNIA.
AUTOMATIC ROAD-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,758, dated September 27, 1904.
Application filed July 31, 1903. Serial No. 167,740. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, HENRY KIROH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Rosa, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented a new and useful Automatic Road-Gate, of which the following isa specification.
My invention is that of a gate suitable to be placed on roads and which can be opened and closed conveniently and easily without leaving the drivers seat on the vehicle and which is firmly held either in an open or closed position by a mechanism which I hereby claim as my own invention. I attain these objects in the following manner and as illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front view of the gate when open; Fig. 2, a side view of the brace, connecting-rods, and part of the gate-frame; and Fig. 3 is a side View of the oscillating leverpost.
(NoTE.The gate here represented is a frame'of iron pipe, with the wire-netting with which it is designed to be covered omitted;
but my mechanism is applicable to any gate) Similar letters apply to similar parts in the several figures.
The gate A is hung by hinges to the gatepost B, which latter is firmly planted in the ground in a vertical position. The top of this post is mortised to receive a lever G about twenty-two feet in length and acts as a fulcrum for the same, and from the farther or outside end of this lever is suspended a rope of convenient length to be reached from the drivers seat in any vehicle. Another and similar lever, C, is set in the top of another post, E, set at such a distance from the first post A that the gate when entirely open will reach it and be prevented from opening any farther. This post E is oscillating, being pivoted to and supported by two blocks F F,
firmly anchored in the ground. Another block, G, also firmly anchored in the ground in the rear and about opposite the middle of the gatefsupports the brace H and its connecting-rods I and K, used in operating the gate. The rod I is coupled to the brace H at one end and to the middle upright L of the gate at the other. K is an iron rod connecting the lever C With the brace H. The rod plays through holes in the projections of a secondary rod M, and by means of a spiral spring N all the jar resulting from the more or less violent motion of the leversOC' in operating the gate is taken off.
The operation of the gate is as follows: A slight pull on either of the levers C or C by means of the rope suspended from the same (not shown in the drawings) causes the levers to rise in the middle, where they are joined by a hinge-joint D, the oscillating post E giving way somewhat at the top to accommodate the action of the levers. The rod K pulls the brace Hfrom its position of rest, Fig. 2, first to a vertical and finally to a backwardly-inclined position, Fig. 1, and this motion by means of the rod I opens the gate and holds it thus securely against the post E, Fig. 1. The team having driven through the gateway, the driver pulls the rope of the other lever, which brings the brace I-I back upon the rod I, where it is embraced by the clasp P, and thus forms a stiff and secure brace against the middle of the gate. obviating any necessity for a latch. The oscillating post E allows the depression of the levers C U in the middle, where they are connected by the joint D. The rod K connects the jointed levers with the mechanism that opens the gate, and between this rod K and its branch rod M there plays a spiral spring. This spring is very essential, as it takes off all the jar resultingfrom the violent motion of the gate in opening and shutting the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A gate-operating device comprising a post rigidly secured a gate hinged thereon, a post pivotally mounted, two levers fulcrumed one on each post and having their meeting ends pivotally connected together, a brace-rod pivotally mounted, arod pivotally secured to said brace-rod and to the gate, ears secured to the second-named rod and adapted to engage the sides of said brace-rod when the gate is closed, against one of said projections, substantially a bracket pivotally mounted on said brace-rod as shown and described. having perforated projections, arod pivotally secured to the lever fulcrumed on the rigidly- 5 secured post, the free end of said rod slidably Witnesses:
.mounted in said perforated projections, and a FRANK KIROH,
coil-spring secured to said rod and bearing L. E. RIOKsEOKER.
