Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SEVERIN ANDER- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Marble township, in the county of Lincoln and State of Minnesota, have invented. a new and useful Improvement in Gates, of which the following isa specification.

In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a perspective view thereof. Fig. 2 is an enlarged broken perspective view of the same. Fig. 3 is a broken detailed side view of the lever and adjunctive parts for actuating the gate-operating means by pedestrians. y y
In practicing my invention I employ a suitable gate 1 preferably of gas-pipe, or other general structural outline, which is slidably suspended in position "from and by means of hanger Z) borneby grooved wheels (Z traveling upon a track 2 suitably secured to posts anchored in the ground in the well known way or otherwise.
Suitably supported in position upon one of the above noted posts and an intermediate post, or otherwise, are arranged a single-grooved pulley (Z and a double-grooved pulley (Z above and in the general longitudinal plane of the gate. Alsotwo addi-. tional pulleys (Z are suitably supported upon other posts similarly secured in place as the aforesaid posts and laterally of the gate, some distance beyond the same.
A lever on of Y-formation is pivoted at the point of conjunction between its leg and arms to an upstanding bar or support 6 secured to the upper rail or bar of the gate, said arms occupying a depending position, the purpose of which will be presently made apparent.
A cable 3, or like means for actuating the gate, has initially one end secured in an eye 4 terminating the upper end of the Y-form of lever a. Said cable is then passed in engagement with the single-grooved pulley d and returned and passed in contact with, and received in one of the grooves of the double-grooved pulley (Z and from thence it is passed in engagement with one of the pulleys cl". It is thence returned and passed transversely of and so as to be engaged by the upper arm of the Y-form of lever a and to, and in contact with the other of the pulleys cl it then being returned and again passed in contact with the pulley d through the unoccupied groove thereof, and finally back to the lei er a, whence its remaining end is secured in common with its initially secured end, 'to said lever, as shown. \Vhen the cables are moved in the direction shown by the arrows, by either of the grips f, the lever a travels rearwardly, carrying the gate with it which thus causes the gate to open, when the equestrian can pass through the same, after which he can pull the other grip in the opposite direction, which closes the gate again.
The track 2 is secured to suitable supports 6'.
In order to provide against. accidental opening of the gate, a hook c is pivotally mounted in its center on a suitable stationary support and engages a similar hook 5 on the gate, as clearly shown in the drawing. The hook c is normally held in engagement with the hook 5 by means of a spring It will be seen that when the cable is tightened, oneportion of it being arranged under the hook 0 will cause the hook c to move upwardly thereby releasing it from engagement with the other hook 5, thus leaving the gate free to move responsively to the action of the pulleys.
For the convenience of pedestrians, a lever h is employed which is also provided with a spring j, and is connected with the lever a by means of a rod m, which when said lever is actuated so as to move the rod at forward, will actuate the lever a, which raises a portion of the cable, thus releasing the hooks from each other. When the gate 1 is in a closed position, it is braced by means of angle irons i, which have V-shaped openings, which engage the front end of the ate.
g What I claim is,
'1. The combination with a slidable gate, of a cable mounted on-pulleys a lever of inverted Y formation connected to said gate, with the upper end of its stem connected to said cable, said pulleys being arranged, two horizontally and two vertically, the latter also being arranged in a line at right angles to the alinement of the aforesaid pulleys, said lever having one arm adapted to engage said cable, a manually actuated lever applied to the gate and connecting means between the latter lever and the other arm of the first referred to lever.
2. The combination with a slidable gate, of a cable, pulleys encompassed by said cable, a lever of Y formation, connected to said gate, with one arm adapted to laterally engage said cable and the upper end of its stem portion connected to said cable, that portion of said cable connected to said lever extending in the general direction of the movement of the gate and that portion of said cable engaged by said lever-arm extending in a line at right angles to the alinement of the aforesaid portion of said cable, a manually actuated lever applied to the gate and means effecting connection between the latter lever and the other arm of the first referred to lever.
3. The combination with a slidable gate,
of a cable, pulleys encompassed by said cable a lever of Y formation, connected to said gate, with one arm adapted to laterally engage said cable and the upper end of its stem connected to said cable, that portion of said cable connected to said lever extending in the general direction of the movement of said gate and that portion of said cable engaged by said lever-arm extending in a direction at right angles to the aforesaid cable portion, a manually actuated lever, conneetii'lg means between the latter lever and the first referred tolevcr, a support and interlocking members between said gate and said support, said cable being adapted as it is engaged by said lever-arm, to separate said interlocking members.
