To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'rIs E. ALWINE. a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkhart, county of Elkhart, and State of ln diana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gates, more particularly to tilting gates; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide effective and simple means for tightening the wires of the gate frame; second, to provide a gate frame that is simple and of low cost of construction; third, to provide effective tilting and latching means not exposed to view or the weather.
Other objects will appear and be more apparent herein, and the new and novel features thereof fully described.
On the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation of theclosed gate-in full lines-and an open gate in dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation showing the lifting levers, chains and lever posts; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the lifting lever casing showing the actuating mechanism assembled therein. Fig. 4f is a section through Fig. 3 on the line Ill-IV. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary plan view, in section, of the lifting lever casing and parts; Fig. 6 is a cross section on line VI-VI of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a view of a tightener pin for tightening the gate frame wires, and a wire end; Fig. 8 is a section on the line V-V of Fig. 3; Fig. 9 is a fragmentary section of the gate frame, latch, latch rod and gate post; Fig. 10 is a section in elevation of the same parts.
The gate frame, on the drawings annexed hereto, is composed of a single piece of bent pipe, or tubing, having top, bottom and end members 1, la, 1b and 1c integrally formed from a single piece of pipe. The members la and 1c are formed at their ends for arrangement within the ends of the lifting lever casing 3 which, together with suitable vertical and horizontal wires 30 form and complete the gate proper.
Gate post 2 is disposed in a convenient position adjacent member 1b of the gate frame and carries latch slot 23 formed therein; Upright forked posts 4 are set in the ground at a convenient point and carry hand levers 5 pivoted on the lever pins 6.
LLifting lever casing 3 comprises a main body member 3b and acover plate 7 which,
when bolted or fastened to 3b, forms an elbow for connecting,jor joining, gate frame members l and l which are arranged within and fastened in the open ends thereof at il and 45, respectively. Lever casing 3 carries a lifting lever 8 having the latch crank 13 and chain levers 9 formed thereon, and disposed in half boxes 10 and 1l of members 3b and 7. Levers 9 have holes 12 formed therein for receiving an end link, or pin, of the lifting chain 3S. The branch lifting chain 39 runs from chain 3S to and connects with eyescrew 25 which is screw threaded into casing 3 at 43 passing through the hole 26 of the gate member 1c to retain same within the end of casing 3. The casing cover plate 7 is bolted, or fastened, to member 3b by means of the iianges 31 and 34, and fiange bolts 33 penetrate bolt holes 32 and 31a formed in said flanges of said members, thereby securely clamping gate frame member 1L within the casing 3 at the forward end 4l.
Horizontal wire members 30 are fastened to the gate member 1b in any suitable `manner and secured at the opposite ends to gate members 1c by tightener pins 27 which carry the eye 29 therein, and the tightener nut 28 thereon. The pin 2T penetrates the holes 42 formed in the gate member lc and has the wire 30 bent through the eye 29 and twisted upon itself for security.
Casing 3 carries the entire gate frame in its finished condition and is j ournaled in the boxes 36 within which the ends of the shaft 35, carried by casing 3, operate. Openings formed at 37 are formed for carrying the shaft 35 which may be fastened therein in any suitable manner. Boxes 36 are set into posts Ll and fastened thereto by screws Ll1.
The lifting lever shaft is loosely arranged within its bearings 10 and 11 formed in the casing 3 to insure an absence of friction. The latch crank 13 is engaged loosely by the latchrod hook 14 which hooks over same. The opposite end of the hook 14 is screw threaded at 17ainto an enlargement 17 of the latchrod 18 and carries a coil spring l5 seated against the washer 16 carried by hook 14. on one end, and seated on the lugs 7a and 3a formed, respectively, on cover plate 7 and main body member 3b. at the other end thereof. The latch-rod 18 is arranged within the gate frame member 1a and extends therein for its entire length, projecting through the end thereof at the hole 9A formed in member l,

carrying at its outer screw threaded end 19, the latch 20, the latch handle 21 and the nut The latch rod 18 penetrates hole 21a of the handle 21 and may be formed of any material suitable for the conditions to be met. By a suitable arrangement of the partsV a wire cable may be substituted therefor and the same results obtained. The nut 22 is screw threaded on rod 18 to set latch handle 21 tightly against the back of the latch 20.
When the gate is closed the latch-rod 18 is projected forward by the action of the coil spring 15., thereby throwing latch 20 into the latch socket 23 of the gate post 2, `When it is desired to open `the gate a sharp pull on the lever 5 accomplishes. it in the following manner: The lifting chain 38 lifts lever 9, which is normally parallel withgate member la, to a vertical position, thereby raising the crank 13 and retracting the latch-rod and latch 2O fromthe socket 23 in the gate post 2. A further application of power on lever 5 lifts and tilts the gate frame until it swings into the. position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings hereto annexed. To close the gate, a pull on the lever 5 is transmitted through chain 38 and the branch 39 to the eyescrew 25 fastened in the upper end of the casing 8. As the gate descends and is .closing the latch 2O contacts with the face of the post 2 and is retracted thereby, but springs forward into the socket 23 when the gate frame is at rest in a closed position.
Having ful-ly described my invention, I claim:-
1. The combination with a gate post and a latch retainer thereon; of a pivotall7 member to form and complete the gate frame mounted gate adapted to swing vertically, said gate having a hollow longitudinal frame member, a combination lifting lever and crank mounted upon the lower frame member of the gate, means applicable to said lifting lever for swinging the gate upon its pivot shaft, a latch operating member yieldably arranged within the longitudinal frame member, connected with and operable by said lifting lever and crank, and a latch mounted upon one end of the latch operating member adapted to engage the latch retainer.
2. In a tilting gate, lthe kcombination with a pivot shaft vand bearings therefor; of a gate mounted upon said shaft and comprising a lifting lever casing secured to said shaft, pivotal therewith, and adapted to form a part of the gate frame, a gate frame member of tubular formation having top, bottom and end members with spaced ends, said lever casing being adapted to receive said spaced ends of said tubular gate frame construction, a lifting lever shaft arranged within the lever casing and extending to the exterior thereof, and means applicable to said lifting lever shaft for swinging the gate upon its pivot shaft.
3. In a gate, the combination with a pivot shaft and supports therefor; of a gate mounted upon said pivot shaft and comprising a lifting lever casing upon which said pivot shaft is mounted, top, bottom and end members of a gate frame formed of a single length of tubular material having spaced ends secured to said lever casing, a lifting lever mounted upon the lever casing, a latch operating member arranged within the bottom member of the gate frame and connected with the lifting lever, means applicable to said lifting lever for swinging thegate upon its pivot shaft, and latch arranged at one end of the latch operating member and connected therewith, said latch and operating member adapted for retraction by Said gate swinging means.

In a tilting gate, the combination with a gate post and a latch retainer thereon ;A of a pivoted gate adapted to swing verticallyv and comprising a lifting lever casing adapted to form a sectionl of the gate frame,l a tubular gate frame member having spaced ends, said spacedends of said frame member being secured to the lifting lever casing to complete the gate frame, a lifting lever mounted upon the lever casing and in rotative relation therewith, a latch operating member yieldably arranged within the lower tubular frame member, connected with the lifting lever and operable thereby, a latch mounted upon one end of the latch operating member adapted to engage the latch re,-
' tainer, and means applicable to said lifting lever for swinging the gate upon its pivot shaft, said latch adapted for retraction by the gate swinging means.
. The combination with a pivot shaft and supports therefor; of a gate pivotally mounted upon the shaft and comprising a casing borne by the pivot shaft, a tubular gate frame having its spaced ends secured to said casing, a lifting lever mounted'upon the gate and adapted to engage gate swinging means, a yieldablelatch operating member arranged within the tubular bottom member of the gate frame retractile by the lifting lever, a latch attached to one end of the latch operating member, retractile therewith, and adaptedv to engage a latch retainer.
6. The combination with a pivot shaft and supports therefor; of a. gate pivotally mounted upon the shaft and comprising a casing borne by the pivot shafta tubular gate; frame having its spaced ends secu-red tosaid casing, a lifting lever mounted upon the gate and adapted to engage gate swinging members, a yieldable latch operating member' arranged within the tubular bottom member of the gate frame ret-ractilev by the lifting lever, a latch attached to one end: of the latch operating; member, retractile there-'17 with, and adapted to engage a latch retainer, a lifting member engaging the lifting lever, and a gate actuating lever connected with the lifting member.
7. A gate provided with a lifting lever casing pivotally mounted, a cover plate mounted upon said casing, journal boxes formed in said lever casing, a rotative lifting lever arranged Within said boxes and adapted to receive gate lifting members.
8. In a tilting gate, the combination of a lifting lever casing provided With a pivot shaft, said casing being adapted to form a section of a gate frame, a gate frame member having spaced ends secured to the eX- tremities of the lever casing to complete the gate frame, a rotative lifting lever mounted upon the lever casing and adapted to receive gate lifting members, a crank carried by the lifting lever, and tension means for holding the crank in a predetermined position.
