LEONARD lVI. STONE, OF PILOT GROVE, MISSOURI.
GATE-OPERATING MECHANISM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD M. STONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pilot Grove, in the county of Cooper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements :in Gate()pcrating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gate operating mechanism.
The primary object of the invention is the provision oil. means in connection with a single opening gate, whereby the latch is held closed when the gate is closed, and the latch permitted to open automatically when it is desired to open the gate.
The invention consists essentially in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings 1 have illustrated one complete example of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application ot' the principles thereof.
Referring to the drawings:liigure 1 is a perspective view of the gate in closed po sition, the opening device being in normal position and holding the latch mechanism closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the gate and its devices, just after the gate opener has been actuated and the latch mechanism has been freed, the gate being shown partly open.
In the preferred embodin'lent of my invention, the gate 1 is adapted to swing in one direction only, and is hinged to the post 2 by a plurality of hinges 3, 3 which are attached by screws as usual to the post 2 and frame bar t of the gate.
The latching mechanism of the gate includes a long latch 5 pivoted to the upright (3 of the ate by a bolt 7, and the latch is retained in a keeper 8 secured to the end upright bar 9 of the gate. A hook or hasp 10 is secured in the gate post 11. to receive the latch bar, and the free end of the latch bar is provided with an adjl'lstable weight 19.. A link 13 which is pivoted to the latch at it connects the latch with an operating lever 15 which is pivoted at 16 in a bracket 17 attached to the top bar .18 of the gate.
The gate openingdevice includes a hinged bar 19 which is hinged to a post 21 at 20,

and this bar may be lifted by means of a pair of pull ropes 22, 22, which have handles 2 attached thereto. In the drawings, for the sake oi. convenience these ropes and handles are shown as dangling from the rings 24 in the cross arm 25 ot the post 26, but in actual use it will ol. course be understood that one of the ropes is located at each side of the gate so that the gate may be opened from either side of the gate as it is approached. The hinged bar 19, which performs the :t'unctions ot a lever in opening and closing the gate, is connected to the gate by means of a link 97 hinged thereto at 38, and slidably connected to the gate by means of an I bolt 2t) which engages the bracket rod 3 attached to the gate bar 18. in Fig. 1 it will be noted that the lever bar '15) is bearing down upon the end 31, of the latch lever 15 to hold the gate in locked position. The latch is held closed by the weight oi. the lever 19 when it rests thereupon as in Fig. 1. To open the latch and the gate, the handle 23 ot ropeBQ is pulled, this movement swings the lever bar 19 upwardly on its hinge 20, and the link 27 bonds from the lever bar at its hinge 2S, and through the connection oi" I bolt 29 and rod 30 pulls the gate (after the weight 12 has opened the latch 5 from the hasp 10) open. \Vhcn the pressure oi. weight is lifted 'lrom the end oi lever 3']. the weight 12 immediately pulls down on the link 13 to unlatch the gate so that the gate may be opened. The latch is held open by the weight [9, until the weight of lever 19 again bears on the lever 31, to lift the weight 12 and lower the latching end oil the latch \Vhat 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:--
The. combination with a gate latching device including a weighted latch pivoted to the gate, a pivoted lever and a link, supported on the gate, of a gate opening device connected thereto and including a lever resting on the latch lever to close the latch and removable therei'rom to open the latch.
in testimony whereof I a'tlix my signature in presence oi two witnesses.
I'JIGONARI') M. STONE. \"Vi tl'lesses I). C. NUNN, J. N. Janvis.
