Description

(No Model.)- D. O. OHADDOOK.
GATE.
Patented Aug. 13, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID C. OHADDOOK, OF MINERVA, OHIO.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 408,825, dated August 13, 1889.
Application filed March 25, 1889. Serial No. 304,740. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID C. CHADDOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minerva, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is an isometrical view. Fig. 2 is a View of a portion of the gate proper, showing the hinge-eyes properly attached.
The present invention has relation to gates; and it consists in the ditferentparts and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the gate, which may be substantially of the form shown in the drawings, and is hinged to the post 13 by means of the hinges a and a. For the purpose of causing the gate Ato close automatically, the hinge a is longer than the hinge a, thereby elevating the free end of the gate as it is opened. To the post 0 is securely attached the catch Z), which is for the purpose of receiving the latch b. The latch Z) is pivoted to the gate A, andis located substantially as shown in the drawings. To the latch b are attached the cords D and D. Both of said cords extend or pass through the eye E, and are provided with the knot or stop F. The cord D passes through the eye Gand extends through the eye II. The cord D passes through the eye Grand extends through the eye I. The free ends of the cords D and D are provided with the weights J, which are for the purpose of holding the cords D and D tight when the gate is closed. To the post K is securely attached the bar L, which is located substantially as shown in the drawings, and should be of such a length that the gate can be opened without interfering with the team.
\Vhen it is desired to open the gate, one of the cords D or D is drawn downward at its The operation of my gate is as follows:
free end, thereby lifting the latch 11' out of the catch 1) and releasing the gate, which is opened by continuing to pull upon the cord until the latch 19 reaches the catch N, which holds the gate A open, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1.
WVhen it is desired to close the gate, the opposite cord from the one used in opening it is drawn down until the latch b is released from the catch b when the gate is free to close by its own weight.
It will be seen that by my peculiar arrangement the gate A can be opened by hand without interfering with the cords D and D when it is desired, thereby providing a gate convenient to be opened by persons 011 foot. It will also be seen that by mypeculiararrangement the gate can be opened from either side, and at-the same time I am enabled to provide a gate which will be cheap and easily operated.
It will be seen that as the gate A is opening the slack of the cords D and D will be taken up by the weights J until they strike the ground. In case it is desired, openings may be provided to permit the weights J to take up the entire slack of the cords D and D.
The post J may be dispensed with and an arm be attached to the postB for the purpose of carrying the cord D.
I am aware that cords have heretofore been used for the purpose of opening gates, and hence I do not claim, broadly, the use of cords.
Having fully described my inventiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I The combination of the gate A, hinged to the post B by the long hinge a and the short hinge a, and provided with the latch b, the catches b and b the cords D and D, passing through the guide-eyes G, H, and I, and the Weights J, attached to the free ends of the cords D and D, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
DAVID C. OHADDOOK.
