SAM HILDEN, OF VOLGA, SOUTH DAKOTA.
GATE-OPERATING MEANS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAM HILDEN, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Volga, in the county of Brookings and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Operating Means, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gates and has for its object to provide means whereby a swinging gate pivotally mounted on a vertical axis may be unlatched and opened and closed at points removed therefrom.
Another object is the provision of a spring actuated latch having connection with the gate operating means whereby the latch is automatically operated to release the gate when the operating means are actuated.
With these and other objects, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and the formation of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the improved gate in closed position and the operating means therefor, Fig. 2 represents a top plan view of the gate in opened position, and, Fig.3 represents an enlarged side elevation, partly broken away, of the ate and spring actuated latch therefor.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, numerals 5 and 6 indicate the gate posts embedded in the ground on opposite sides of a roadway. A gate 7 is pivotally secured to the post 6 by hinges 8 and is provided at its free end with a pivoted latch 9 normally retained in extended position by the spring 10' secured in the latch housing 11. The latch 9 is adapted to engage behind a keeper 12 secured to the gate post 5 to lock the gate in closed position. The gate 7 swings open only in a direction toward an intermediate standard 13 carrying a keeper '14 adapted to receive the latch 9 to lock the gate in open position as illustrated in Fig. 2.
End posts designated by the numerals 15, 16, 17 and 18 are arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the gate 7, and the posts of each pair are arranged on opposite sides of the roadway. A pulley is secured adjacent the upper end of the end post 15 and a latch 9, is positioned over a pulley 24 se-.
cured to a latch 9 of the gate 7 and is secured at its opposite extremity to the ring 22.
It will be noted that the opening line between the intermediate post 13 and the ring 22 extends across the roadway and thus when the free end of the said line is pulled,
the latch 9 is drawn inwardly from the keeper 12 and the gate 7 turns on its hinges 8 and swings open against the intermediate post 18. The line 20 is then released and the latch 9 automatically seats behind the keeper 1 1 and locks the gate in opened position.
The gate is closed from the side opposite the post 15 by a closing line 26 extending from a pulley or the like 26 secured adjacent the upper end of the end post 18 over a pulley or the like 27 on the gate post 5 and secured at its inner extremity to the ring 22. When the free end of the line 26 is pulled the latch 9 is drawn inwardly through the line 23, thus releasing the gate 7 and permitting it to move to closed position. hen the line 26 is released, after the gate is closed, the tension of the spring 10 automatically holds the latch 9 behind the keeper 12 and locks the gate in closed position. In order that the gate may be operated by a person traveling from left to right on the roadway, an opening line 30 is extended over a pulley or the like 31 on the end post 17 and over pulleys 32 and 33 on the post 6 and the intermediate post 13. The inner extremity of the line 30 is secured to the ring 22, and when the free extremity thereof is pulled, the latch 9 is withdrawn and the gate 7 swung to opened position. A closing line 84: is extended over a pulley or the like 35 on the end post 16 and over a pulley 36 on the gate post 5 and the inner extremity thereof being secured to the ring 22 whereby when said line 2% is pulled at its free extremity, the latch 9 is withdrawn from the keeper 1& and the gate swung to closed position.
If desired, suitable handles or weights may be secured to the free ends of the several lines for tensioning them and prevent ing them from tangling.
Patented Dec. 21, 1915.
What I claim is:
In combination, a pair of gateeposts, a gate hinged to one of said posts, a keeper secured to the other post a springaaetuatedn latch pivotally secured to said gate adapt-. ed 'to engage behind= said-keeper to=-lock said-i gate in closed position, posts arranged out- Wardly and on oppositefsides of'sai'd'gate' posts, an intermediate post constituting; a stop} for 'said'gate, akee'per on said inter mediate post' to receivesa'id spring actuated latch,"pulleys secured on the outer-gate and. intermediate'posts, an opening line arranged on one side of "said "gate andf'exten'ded over the pulleys of one of said outer posts andsaid intermediate post,' a ring secured to the inner end ofsaid openingline, a pulley se cured to said gate, a latch operating ,lin'e -ar'-' ranged"iund'erthe last menti'oned pulley secured at one end 'to said "latch and 'at the oppositeend3t0 said ring, a closing line ar'- Copiesof thistpatenhmayibe obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of -Iatents,
rangedsupon the side of said gate opposite said opening line and extended over the pulleys on another of the outer posts and the keeper.carrying gate post and secured at its..inner extremity to said ring, a second openingaline secured to said ring-extending over the pulleys on the intermediate gate carrying "and outer-"posts and terminating on the side of the gate opposite the first-mentioned opening line; anda second. closing line secured to said ring; extending over the pulleys on the keeper carrying gate postand another of the outer posts and. terminating on the side" of said gate" opposite the first-mentioned closing line;
