BOTTLE-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,528, dated September 20, 1904.
Application filed May 12, 1904. Serial No. 207,685. (No model.)
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that L GEORGE L. KESTNER, a citizen of the United States of America` residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle- Protectors, of which the following is a specitication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to bottle-protectors, and has for its object the provision of novel means whereby when a bottle is being opened or uncorked the bottle and its contents will be protected, also the person opening the bottle.
Another object of my invention is to provide a protector for bottles which is adapted to surround the bottle and protect the same while it is being handled and in case the bottle should become broken to protect the party opening the same from being cut or otherwise injured from the bottle.
Novel means is provided whereby a bottle may be supported within the protector and also means whereby said protector may be readily placed upon the bottle and quickly removed therefrom after the same has been opened.
The many advantages of my improved bottle-protector will be apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bottle-protector, showing a part of the same having a bottle placed therein. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line m of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings accompanying this application, the referencejnumeral 1 indicates an ordinary form of bottle which comprises a body portion 2, and a neck 8, this neck being provided with an annular enlargement 4 around its upper edge, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The bottle is incased by onehalf of my improved bottle-protector.
reference-numeral 6 the other, these halves beinghinged together, as indicated at 7 and 8, the hinges being ofany preferred form which is advantageous to the general construction of the protector. These two half-sections comprising my improved bottle protector are shaped to conform in outline to the contour of a bottle, each half-section comprising a seimicircular base portion 9, which is formed integral with the side 10, this side being also semicircular in form and tapers, as indicated at 11, to a contracted portion which corresponds to the general contour of the ordinary bottle-neck. Each of these half- sections 5 and 6 is preferably formed or cast from one piece of metal, whereby the cost of manufacture is reduced to a minimum, and upon the base portion 9 of each half-section 1 secure a semicircular gasket 12,and1 also secure by any desired means another semicircular gasket, 14, in each of the halves 5 and 6, these gaskets 14. being placed intermediate the length of the protector and preferably at the point where the sides commence to taper to the contracted neck portion l1. By employing these gaskets the bottle when placed in the protector is cushioned therein, and any jar upon the bottle is taken up by the gaskets and the bottle thoroughly protected from becoming broken orv cracked.
When it is desired to open the bottle or withdraw a cork, the protector is placed around the bottle, as shown in Figs. 2 and 8 of the drawings, the half- sections 5 and 6 of the protector being held together at the neck portion by the person opening the bottle, and it will be seen that in case the bottle should become cracked or the neck portion should snap off the contents of the bottle will be saved and the party opening the same will be protected from thebroken glass or cracked edges of the bottle.
While I have herein shown the preferred form of constructing my improved protector, it is obvious that any form of clasp may be readily employed for securing the two halfsections together, and the arrangement and two of said semicircular gaskets surrounding the body ofthe bottle and two surrounding the corner or edge'formed by the meeting of I5 the bottom and side walls, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE L. KEsTNER.
