DOUBLE-WALLED VESSEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 1909.
Application filed July 24, 1908. Serial No. 445,113.
Be it known that I, HUBERT HENN, a subject of the German Emperor, and resident of Berlin, Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Double- Walled Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to double walled vacuum vessels of glass or other fictile material, in which the inner and outer walls are united at the mouth of the vessel and inclose between them a rarefied space.
The invention consists in the construction of the device for supporting the inner wall on the outer wall when the vessel is tilted from a vertical position or subjected to lateral shock, as more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a double walled vessel in vertical central section with two of the improved stiffening devices applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a section taken in the plane of the line A-A of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a section taken in the plane of the line B-B of Fig. 1.
The outer wall 1 and the inner wall 2 are united with each other only at the mouth of the vessel and they iriclose between them a rarefied space 3. 30
The upper stifiening device comprises a band ring 4 snugly embracing the inner wall of the vessel, which band ring-is provided with outwardly projecting prongs 5 each engaging a stifiening block 6 of some suitable non-heat-conducting material, such, for in stance, as asbestos or cork. The outer faces of these stiffening blocks 6 engage the inner face of the outer wall 1, for holding the inner wall spaced from the outer wall at this point. The lower stiflening device com rises a flat ring 7 surrounding the inner wal and spaced from both the inner and outer walls. This ring 7 is provided with prongs 8 uprising therefrom, each of which prongs 'engagesa sti'llenin'g block 9 of some suitable non-heatconducting material, such, for instance, as asbestos or cork. The inner faces of-these blocks 9 engage the outer face of the inner wall 2 and'the outer faces of these blocks engage the inner face of the outer wall 1 for holding the inner wall spaced from the outer Wall. vices it will be seen. that the blocks are held space,
In both of these stifiening depermanently in position by the rings so that they can not be displaced. Furthermore, in neither of these forms does the ring bridge the space between the inner and outer walls. Therefore, these rings will not transmit the variations in temperature from the inner wall to the outer wall.
In order to provide a more elastic support for the inner wall at the greatest distance from the junction of the two walls at the mouth of the vessel, I arrange the lower series of stiffening blocks so that they are held from dis lacement by frictional contact with both wa ls. "On the other hand as the upper series of blocks are located nearer the neck and at a point where the relative movement of the walls on tilting the vessel is less, I connect said blocks positively by means of the band and prongs to the inner wall.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a double walled vessel comprising inner and outer walls united with each other only at the mouth of the vesseland inclosing between them arareiied space, of a stiffening device comprising a ring surrounding the inner Wall, said ring being provided with prongs, and spacing blocks of non-heatconducting material engaged by said prongs whereby the blocks are held.

The combination with a double walled vessel comprising inner and on ter Walls united with each other only at the mouth of the vessel and inolosing between them a rarefied space, of a stiffening device comprising a ring embracing the inner wall, said ring being provided with outwardly extending prongs, and stiffening blocks engaging said prongs and interposed between the ring and the outer wall for holding outer wall.
3. The combination with a double walled vessel comprising inner and outer walls united With each other only at the mouth of the vessel and inclosing between them a rarefied of a stifiening device comprising a ring surrounding the inner wall and spaced from the inner and outer walls, said ring being provided with prongs, and stiffening blocks of non-heat-conducting material engaging said rongs and the inner and outer walls for holdmg. the inner wall spaced from the outer Wall. 4.
