PATENT OFFICE.
AUGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,480, dated September 20, 1904.
Application filed June 13, 1903. Renewed February 27, 1904. Serial No. 195,673. (No model.)
To (l/ZZ whom, it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, GUsTAv'A. STANGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Brimfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Augers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to augers for the use of carpenters and others; and it consists in the novel construction of the anger as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawing the figure is a side view of an auger constructed according to this invention.
The auger is formed of a series of spiral coils A, which are conical at their peripheries b. The conical portions are arranged at an angle of about twelve degrees, as indicated by the dotted lines in the drawing, and the smaller parts of the conical portions are arranged toward the gimlet end or point 0 of the auger.
The auger is provided with a shank (Z of any approved form for operating it.
The coils A are all of the same diameter, and they are Wound upon a central bar in the process of manufacture. This bar is subsequently removed, so that there is a central opening at the axis of the auger between its coils.
An auger formed in this manner clears itself as it is drawn out from its holes, and it is therefore easier to withdraw and less liable to be broken. It is proportionally stronger and it Works more freely, particularly in green wood;
What I claim is An auger formed of a series of coils'of the same diameter arranged around a central opening and being conical at their peripheries.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GUSTAV A. STANGER.
