UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
JOSEPH FLEISCHMANN, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPlNNlNG -TOP AND HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 680,323, dated August 13, 1901.
' Application filed June 21,1901. SerialNo. 65,447. (ll omodeld To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH FLEISCHMANN, a citizen of Germany, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usefullmprovementsin Spinning-Tops and Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved spinning-top andholder for the same; and it consists in the certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved top and holder, showing the parts in position ready for spinning, the said top and holder being constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the top. Fig. 3 is-aplan View of a portion of the holder. Fig. 1 is an inverted plan View of the upper section of the top. Fig. 5 is a plan View of the lower section of the same. Fig.
6 is a sectional View of the top, showing a modified form of connecting the two sections of the top together.
To put my invention into practice, I form from wood or other suitable material a spinning-top, consisting of an upper section 1 and a lower section 2, joined together and the said lower section fitted with a point or shank 3, secured in position by means of a screwthread 4. These two sections are joined the one with the other by means of circumferential grooves 7, formed in the inner walls of the lower section 2, engaging with pins 6, formed with the upper section 1, as shown at Fig. 2 of the drawings. These two sections of the top when joined together leaves a spherical cavity or space inside the said top, and by means of perforations 5, formed through the upper section 1, the top when in rapid motion gives forth a peculiar whistling sound.
To provide a means for holding and spinning the above described top, I form from wood or other substance a handle 11, having integral therewith an annular holder 10 and being provided with an orifice 12 for the reception of the shank of the top, and also with a transverse opening 13, through which the string or cord 14 is threaded. This cord 13 is attached to a small handpiece 15.
In operation the free end of the cord 14 is first passed through the opening 13 of the holder 10 and the said end wound about the spindle 3 in a manner well known in the art. The top is now placed in the holder, as shown at Fig. 1 of the drawings, and by holding the handle 11 firmly in the one hand and grasping the small handpiece 15 in the other,loy-a strong steady pull upon the said handpiece the top will be given a rapid rotary movement within the holder 10, from which position it may be removed without interrupting its motion.
Various slight modifications may be made in the details of construction without depart ing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is i The herein -described spinningtop, and holder for the same, consisting of the top constructed in two sections, and provided with an inner cavity, perforations leading to the said inner cavity, and a point or shank 3, fitted to the lower section 2, a means for connecting the two sections of the top together consisting of radial pins engaging with circumferential slots 7, in combination with a holder, consisting of the handle portion 11, the integral annular holder '10 provided with the orifice 12 for the reception of the shank of the top, and the transverse opening 13 through which the free end of the cord is threaded, all arranged and combined for service, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JO SEPH FLEISOHM ANN.
