Description

GEORGE DEAS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 77,007, dated April 21, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN VENTILATORS FOR HATS! en dgthule mam-1n in time iltilttfi sum mm mating put at the time.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Bc'it known that I, GEQRGE DEAS, of the city, county, and. State of New York, have invented a new and improved Ventilator for Hats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, referencebeing hadto the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. I
Thisinvcntion relates to a new and improved device, which is applicable to all kinds of hats; and it con sists in attaching, to the inside of the hat, elastic and adjustable bands or rings, formed of vulcanized India rubber or other suitable material, as will be hereinafter morefully described.
Figure 1 represents an edge view of two such bands or rings, showing the manncrin which they are connectcd together, and the provision which is made for their proper adjustment.
Figure 2 represents a vertical section of the ventilator as when applied to a but, showing the bands attached to the hat, with the side of the hat removed, so as to espose the outer band.
Figure 3 is a section of the inner band, showing the manner in which the ends ofthc material of which the band is formed are secured together.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. A is the hat, which may be of any size, form, or material; B is the outer band, which is perforated, as seen at c, for the purpose of fastening itto the inside of the hat, the perforations being seen in fig. 2.
This band is. made so that the ends of the piece of material of which it is composed lap by each other, which allows it to be adjusted to the size of the inside of the hatbefore it is fastened, its elasticity admitting of the necessary expansion or contraction.
E represents the inner band. The method by which it;,is adjusted to the size of the head is seen in fig. 3.
The slit and button-fastening, D, whileit holds the pnrtsin close contact, allows of the necessary expansion or contraction for properly fitting the head.
Thetwo bands or rings are connected together by springsfy; fig. 1,-for the purpose of keeping them in a proper relative position to each other, and to aid in the adjustment to the head. They are also permanently connected by a stud-rivet,,ns seen at g.
The three conneoticns,f,f, and g, are suificicnt to keep the inner band in place, while the other or opposite part of the circle is allowed to expand or contract, and thus adjust itself to the size and shape of the head, as may be desired.
h is a stud, attached to the outer-band B, ,for'the purpose of preventing actual contact between the two bands.
J is an open space between the two bands, which .allows ofperfeot ventilation.
These ventilating-rings may be attached to bats of every description, their elasticity and adjustability being such that a perfect fit, as to size and shape, may be secured for all heads, with a very limited number of these double bands of varying diameters.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desireto secureby Letters Patent- A ventilator for hats, formed of the elastic adjustable'bands B and E, connected together by springs, with an open space between them, each being adjustable, the enter one to the size nnd'shapc of the hat, and the inner one to the size and shape of the head, substantially as herein shown and described. 7
' Y GEO. DEAS.
