Description

UNITED STATES Patented September 6, 1904.
PATENT OEEioE.V
BOX-COVER SUPPORTER AND HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,481, dated September 6, 1904,
Application flied April is, 190s.
To all whom, it indy concern,.-
Be it known that I, VILLIAM HENRY KID- DER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Colchester, in the county of Chittenden and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Box-Cover Supporter and Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a box-cover holder, and particularly to a device adapted to support the cover in a plurality of positions relative to the box.
The invention has for an object to provide a plate having' at one end means for engaging a cover and at the opposite end a plurality of slots or equivalent means adapted to adjustably engage the edg'e of a box.
Other and further objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth, and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of the holder; Fig'. 2, a similar view of a moditied form of the invention. Fig'. 3 is a perspective showing' the application of the holder to a box in one position, and Fig'. 4 a similar view showing another adjustment of the holder.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring' to Fig'. l, the letter A designates a plate of metal or other suitable material, preferably formed from a single blank and provided at one end with means for-engag'ing' a cover and at the opposite end with a plurality of means for engaging a portion of a box-body. These eng'ag'ing'means preferably comprise slots having tongues at the opposite sides thereoffor instance, a cover-engaging slot Al at one end, having' tong'ues t and b at opposite sides thereof. These tongues may also be bent away from the plate at an angle thereto, as shown in Fig'. l, or upon a curved line, as shown in Fig. 2. The box-engaging end of the holder may likewise be provided with a series of slots A2, disposed in different positions relative to the slot A and formed within the enlarged portion A3 of the holder, thus providing tongues upon the opposite sides of each slot.
Three of these box-enseritl No. 153,186. (No model.)
g'ag'ing' slots are shown in Fig'. l, thus adapting' the cover for adjustment into three different positions; but it will be apparent that the number of slots may be varied.
In the modilied form of the holder shown in Fig'. 2 the plate B is curved and the coverengag'ing slot B formed at one end thereof with the tongues a and at opposite sides thereof. In this form of the invention two box-engaging slots B2 are provided in the enlarged end B3 of the plate.
In the application of the invention it will be seen that the cover may be adjusted at different inclinations relative to the box by engagement of the different box-holdingslots, while the tongues at the cover-holding slot permit engagement with the cover upon a side edge thereof. The holder is adapted to be formed from a blank of material by a sing'le stamping' operation, thus effecting' the utmost simplicity and economy of construction, while the formation of the slots in the body of the material provides a rigidity of the tongues adjacent thereto, which prevents bending' or injury of the holder in its use and provides means for holding the box-cover at a predetermined angle.
It will be obvious that changes may be made in the details of construction and conliguration without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what l desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent isl. A box-cover holder comprising a single plate having' cover-engaging means at one end and a plurality of box-engaging' means at the opposite end adapted for independent engagement with a box.
2. A box-cover holder provided at one endV with a co\f*er-eng'aging' slot having tongues at opposite sides thereof bent away from the body of said holder and a plurality of boxengaging' slots at the opposite end of the holder disposed in different positions relative to the cover-engaging slot.
A box-cover holder provided with a plurality of slots at one end having' tongues upon each side thereof to adjustably engage the edge of bent away from the body of said holder in a curved line to engage the cover of said boX.
In testimony whereof I have signed m y name to this speoieation in the presence of two Witnesses.
VILLIAM HENRY KIDDER.
