LOCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,178, dated September 6, 1904. Application filed July 15, 1904. Serial No. 216,679. (No model.)
To all 1071 0712, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK IV. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lockets, of which the following is .a specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in lockets, and more particularly to an improvement in hinges for lockets.
The object of my invention is to hinge the I front and back of a locket together without the use of solder.
A further object of my invention is to form a hinge without protuberances on the exterior surface of the locket.
My invention consistsin the peculiar and novel construction of a hinge for lockets, said hinge having a T-shapcd member-formed integral with the front of the locket, the shank of the T-shaped member being bent inwardly approximately at right angles, an inwardl extendingcircular lip in the back of the locket, in which is an opening extending through the lip and back for the shank of the T-shaped member, and a circular locking-band having a spring-tongue adapted to hold the arms of the T-shaped member under the inwardlyextending lip and against the inner rounded edge of the back, thereby hinging the front to the back ofthe locket without solder, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a front view of a locket provided with my improved hinge. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the locket looking at the hinge. Fig. 3 is a view of the locket in the open position looking at the interior of the locket. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view showing the T-shaped hinge member formed integral with the front of the locket. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the back of the locket, showing the inwardly-extending lip on the back and the slot for the shank of the T-shaped hinge member. Fig. 6 is an en larged detail fragmental view of the lockingband, showing the spring-tongue for the hinge; and Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail sectional view through the hinge of the locket, showing the front of the locket closed in full lines and in the open position in broken lines.
.of the T and forming the In the drawings, a indicates the ring, 6 the head, 0 the front, (Z the back, a the lockingband, and f the picture-retaining ring, of the locket. The front 0 and the back (Z are stamped up from sheet metal to form the usual hollow circular locket-body. The T- shaped hinge member 0 is formed integral with the cover 0, the shank 0 extending from the edge of the cover and merging into the square cross-arm 0 0 representing the head pintle of the hinge. The shank 0 is bent inwardly approximately at right angles, as shown in 4 and 7. The back (Z has the inwardly-extending circular lip (Z and the opening (Z which extends through the lip and rounded edge of the back, as shown in Figs. 5 and '7. The locking-band 0 consists of a flat circular band of spring metal constructed to have the slots 6 6 forming the spring-tongue In hinging the cover 0 to the back (Z the shank of the T-shaped hinge member is placed in the opening (Z in the back and the cover closed. This brings the square crossarms 0" 0 under the lip (Z against the inner rounded edge of the back and across the opening (Z The cover is now opened and the locking-band 0 placed in position in the back Z to bring the spring-tongue against the square cross-arms c 0 as shown in Figs. 3 and 7. The cover 0 is now held in either the closed or open position by the spring-tongue 0 By the use of my improved hinge in lockets the front and back of the locket are hinged together without the use ofsolder and without protuberances on the exterior surface of the locket, forming practically a simple and inexpensive concealed hinge.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a locket, a hinge consisting of a T- shaped member on the front or cover of the locket, an inwardly-extending lip in the back of the locket through which is an opening, and a locking-band having a springtongue, as described.
2. In a locket, a hinge consisting of a T- shaped member formed integral with the front or cover of the locket, an inwardly-extending lip in the back of the locket through which 0 0 formed integral with the front 0, an inwardly-extending lip d in the back (Z having the opening (Z and a locking-band 6 having the slots 6 e forming the spring-tongue 6 as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK WV. MOORE.
