:SPECIFICATION brmng part of Letters Patent No. 718,562, dated January 13, 1903.
l Application filed July 24, 1902. Serial No. 116,774. (No model.)
T @ZZ whom t muy concern:
Beit known that I, LoUIsA. BLACKINTON, a citizen of the-United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lockets, of which the following is a specication.
Myinvention relates to that class of lockets wherein the joint or hinge is concealed, and has for its purpose a structure wherein the jointshallbe what might betermed' blindthat is, escape that defect now common in concealed-joint"7 lockets, so called, which consists in certain visible external seams adjacent the hinge. I am aware that recentattempts have been successful in elitectinga perfectly blind joint in lockers comprising a third hinged intermediate member; but it is evident that the addition of this third member provides a means of concealing the hinge which cannot be utilized in a locket of the ordinary type, to which my invention is, directed.
The object cited, together with other advantages of strength and simplicity, are attained by means of the novel construction and arrangement of parts herein described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figures l and 2 are elevations of the inner sides of my locket-covers; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the coversin open position; Fig. 4, a transverse section of thecom plete locket closed; Fig. 5, a similar section of the same open; Fig. 6, an edge View of the closed locket, and Figs. 7 and 8 details showing the construction of the pivot member.
Like letters of reference indicate like part-s throughout the views.
The locket comprises two preferably circular conveXo-concave covers A and B, each provided with a fiat inwardly-directed annular flange a and b, respectively. Upon the upper edge of the cover A is a suspension-ring c. Ninety degrees distant from this ring the flange d is recessed, CZ, to allow a bearing for a post e, soldered to the cover below the flange. Diam'etrically opposite this post the flange o1y is segmentally recessed, f, to provide a clearance and stop for the edge of the cover B when the latter is in open position. This recess renders the contiguous portion g of the flange comparatively weak at a point where the strain upon the parts is excessive. Hence to remedy this weakness a block h is soldered intermediate the base of the cover and the strip g of the iiange. Upon this strip is soldered the hinge member t. (Shown in detail in Fig. 8.) It is formed from a flat blank originally T-shaped, as shown in Fig. 7. A rectangular bend of the shank produces the final form-namely, a vertical face j and a horizontal extension k, with lateral lugs Z.
The flange b of the cover B is recessed at diametrically opposite points-one recess, m, to allow frictional passage of the post-terminal e and the other, n, to allow a clearance for the portion 7c of the joint 'L'.
In the frame a is inserted, preferably frictionally, the usual annular frame r, containing the back t and portrait s.
In open position it will be seen that the hinge member is of such a shape that it ad-l mits of'sufticient horizontal movement to allow the margin of the cover I3 to register with the slotf, while in closed position the peripheries of the two covers coincide.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s v l. In a locket of the class described, the combination with two conVeXo-concave covers of an internal peripheral flange upon each cover, a recess in the flange of one cover to receive the edge of the other cover, a hinge member projecting from the said recessed flange, and a recess in the flange of the other cover in which the hinge member is loosely pivoted.
2. Inv a locket of the class described, the combination with two conveXo-concave covers of an internal peripheral flange upon each cover, a recess in the ange of one cover near itscperiphery, an upright hinge member lixed to the portion of the flange adjacent the recess and rnost remote from the said periphery,
a rearwardly-directed extension upon the hinge member, lateral lugs upon the end of the extension, and a rectangular recess in the ange of the other cover in which the hinge member is adapted to register.
In testimony whereot` I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS A. BLACKINTON.
