To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lockets, of which the following is a specification.-
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in lockets, and the primary object of the invention is to produce a locket in which all of the parts are assembled without the use of solder.
Further, the invention aims to improve, simplify and decrease the cost of manufacture of articles of this type.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention showing the completed locket in open position. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cup-shaped body. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the spring disk. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the cover. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the circular ring-like rim, and Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the ring shaped staple.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, a cup-shaped body 1 is employed, the bounding wall 2 of which is formed with an opening 3, and a staple having a ring-shaped end 4 has its legs 5 introduced through the opening 3 and turned outwardly as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 7 to engage the inner face of the wall 2. A circular spring disk 6, which is formed with a pair of slits 7 that provide a tongue 8, is then placed in the cup-shaped body 1, and the cover 9 is thereupon inserted in the body, the cover having an off-set T-shaped actuating piece or member 10 which projects outwardly from the periphery thereof, and disposed so that said piece or member 10 engages the spring tongue 8 of disk 6, which tongue 8 is bent outwardly as depicted in Fig. 2. A flanged ring-like rim member 11 concave in cross-section is then placed on top of the disk 6, the member 11 being of such size as to conformably receive the cover 9 on its inner circumference. Member 11 is formed with an opening 12 of a size to receive neck 13 of the actuating piece 10, the ends 14 of the actuating piece or member being engaged on the inner side face of the rim member 11 and on opposite sides of the opening 12 thereof, whereby it will be seen that the said ends 14 provide hinge pintles for the cover, the sockets for which pintles PAUL A. are formed by the rim member 11. The cover is provided with an outwardly bent portion 1 1 which provides a finger engaging means used in opening of the cover. After the parts have been assembled as described, the peripheral edge of wall 2 is then bent over to engage the flange of the r m member 11 t0 clench the latter in position, whereby it will be seen that all of the parts are secured together without the use of solder, and a simple, inexpensive structure is produced. It will further be seen that the entire article is formed of but five parts shown separately in Figs. 3, l, 5, 6 and 7.
A bezel with a piece of celluloid or glass may be placed in the opening of the rim 11 to cover and retain a picture, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a locket, a body of cup-shape, a disk in the body having an integral spring tongue, a cover having a T-shaped actuat ing member engaged with said spring tongue, a rim member seating on the disk, the wall of said body having an opening, and a ring-shaped staple having its legs in serted through said opening and bent outwardly from each other to engage the wall of said body, the edge of said body wall being turned over to engage the rim member, said rim member having an opening which receives the shank of the actuating member, and the ends of the actuating memher, being engaged under the rim member.
2. In a locket, a cup-shaped body, a spring disk in the body, a ring-like rim member having an opening in its inner circumference, and a cover for engagement with the inner circumference of the rim member having an actuating member which is received in said opening and engages said spring disk, the peripheral edge of the body being bent over to engage said rim member.
3. In a locket, a cup-shaped body, a disk in the body having a spring tongue, a ringlike rim member concave in cross section on the disk, and a cover for engagement with the rim member having means to engage said tongue and means to form hinge pintles, said rim member providing sockets to receive said pintles, the free edge of the body being rolled over to engage the rim member.
4.
