Description

glatten tstr atwt @fitta 'THOMAS BRETT, OF GENEVA, OHIO, ASISIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND W. H.
SAXTON, OF SAME PLAGE.
Leners Paten: No'. 76,883, dans April 21, 186s.
'IMPROVEMENT IN RESTS FOR GRINDING HARVESTER-CUTTERS.
ifi-Lt .tlgciule return tu in tlgese httets rtuit mit limiting intl: at its time.
TO ALL WIIOM 1T MAY CONGERN:
De itknown that I, THOMAS BRETT, of Geneva, in the county of Ashtabula, and'State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rest for Grinding .Harvester-Cutters,Ste.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full andcomplete description of the same, reference being Vhad t6 the accompanying drawings, banking a part of this specication, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the rest.
Figure 2, a view of the top.
Figure 3, an end view.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several views presented. 4
This implement consists of a pair of jaws, A, iig. l, connected to a. slotted stay or standard, B, fig. 3,
a short curving neck, C, and 4to which standard it is secured -bya finger-screw, D, passing through the shit',
referred to, as shown in iig. 1, thus rendering the jaws on the standard adjustable.
The practical use of this implement is for holding the knives ofal mowing-machine to tbefacc ofthe grindstnne while they are being ground, so that a true and uniformedge and basil may be obtained to 'each section alike; also to assist in supporting the knives, and thereby relieve the grinder from sustaining the whole weight upon his hands, which, in grinding a whole range o f-knives, is usually very strainingand tiresome to the arms.
AThe application of this implement to tbe purpose specified isas follows: A whole range, or a single section, is placed in tl1ejaws,as shown in iig..2, and'securedv therein by the-tinger-screw E. The edge of the knife is then brought to the face of the stone, the desired basil of whichbeing gauged by the degree of the angle that the standard may be made to assume to the horizontal position of the sections; also the distance that'the roller F may be from the screw D, and which roller is made t0 restupon the stone and support the knives in any direction or position determined for the basil-angle. Thus the greater the distance that the roller may be from theecrew D, or fromthe edge oi' the knife resting on the st0ne,or less the distance the standard may be turned in the direction ofthe dotted lines a, tig. 3, the more abrupt will be the basil-angle. On the contrary, the less the distance of. the roller, or greater the distance of the standard in direction of the line referred to, the inore acute will be the basil-angle; hence it will be evident that bythe use of this rest, every section can be ground to an equal, unifoiin edge, and with bui lilttle wear to the grinder.
What I ela-im as my invention, and desire to secure byA Letters Patent, is-j lThe adjustable standard B, and wheel F, as arranged iu combination with the jaws A, for thepurpose and in the manner as described. i
