JAMES T.-GILMORE, OF PAINEISVILLE', OHIO.
ALette/rs .Patent No. 85,7 37, dated January/i12', 18.69.
IMPRovED MACHINE Fon' rRnmNGiAND nnrissmef M1:'nns'r'olma'sLA The -Schedule'referred to in these Lettera Patent and makingpart of the same.
To all whom 'it ma/y conce/rn Be it known that I, JAMES-T. GILMORE, of Paines ville, in the county of Lake, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Tramming, Staffing, and -Dressing .Millstones; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable-those skilled in the art to makeand use the'same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,
I This invention relates to a new and useful improvement on a machine for tramming, staiing, and dressing millstoues,A for which Letters Patent were granted to me, bearing date October 28,- 1862.
The present invention consists in a modiiication of the construction of the machine as originally patented, whereby the guide on which the cutter-stock works is rendered adjustable in a vertical plane, so that the cutter may be moved, or made to work, in a line slightly .inclined from-a horizontal plane, and the face of the stone dressed in disk-form, or slightly concave from its skiitfor periphery towards its centre, and a proper bosom given the stone, as hereinafter. fully shown and described. y
In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure 1 is a plan or top view of my invention.
Figure 2, a side View of the same,
Figure 3, a` section of the same, taken in the line a: x, iig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents an Vupright hollow journal, provided with a flange, B, at its base, having three lugsv or ears,
at equal distances apart, through which set-screws a pass, to admit of the adjustment of the journal at right angles with the'base of the stone, the journal being nal, asshown clearly in g. l.
AThis arm andthe sleeve are substantially the same as shown'in the original patent, and therefore do not require a minute description.
- n is a guide, which extends the whole length ofthe arm C, and is pivoted toit,`as shown at c in iig. 2, the pivot c passing through the inner endsof the guide and arm. v
The guide is secured to the arm by .set-screws d d,
which pass.through oblong slots, e, in the arm, and
into the rear side of the guide. (See iig. 3.)
vBy slightly unscrewing the screws d d, the guide, it
will be seen, may be raised or lowered from the pivot c as a centre, and secured at a slight ,angle from a horizontal plane.
F is the cutter-stock, which is tted on the guide E, and allowed to slide-freely thereon.
The guide may be of dovetail-form, as originally.
made, and shown in the accompanying drawings, or it may be constructed inother ways.
-Frlom the above description,- it will be'seen that the cutter in stock F is moved in a right line, and, byadjusting the outer part of the guide E in a slightly-l elevated position, the face of the stone will be cut slightly concave from its skirt-or periphery to its eye.
This will be fully understood by referring to fig. 0, iu which the dotted liue e represents the upper surface of the stone-previous to heilig dressed, and the line fthe upper surface of the stone after being dressed. The line f, it will be seen, gradually iuclines downward from the skirt or periphery of the stone to the eye g, so asto form what `is technically termed the bosom, said inclination beingdue to the elevation of the outer part of the guide E.
Thus it will be seen that, by a very simple modification of the original machine, I may give a millst-one the requisite bosom by a triiling adjustment of the guide E.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Pivoting'the guide vE to the arm 0,' and making said guide adjustableou the arm, for the purpose of giving the necessary dish or bosom to the millstone, in the manner substantially as herein set-forth and shown.
JAMES T. GILMORE.

FRANK BLOCKLEY, G. C. COTTON.
