Description
S. D. TUCKER.
MACHINE FOR MAKING PRINTERS RULES.
No. 89,183. Patented Apr. 20, 1869.
dilated 5 STEPHEN D. TUCKER, OF NEW YORK,.,N. Y. Letters mam: Nb. 89,183, dated April 20, 1869.
IMPROVED MACHINE FOR MAKING PRINTERS RULES.
The Schedule refund. to in these Letters Patent and making put-of the same To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, STEPHEN D. TUCKER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Mitring Printers Rules; and I do hereby declare the following to bee. full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the machine;
Figure 2, a top view of the same; and h figure 3 is a vertical sectional view of the cutter- Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the drawings.
My invention consists- First, in the combination and arrangement, with a segment-bed and rule-holder, of a reciprocating vibrating cutter-head.
h Sgcond, in the mechanism for operating the cutterea nThird, in making the segment-bed adjustable latera y.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe its construction and mode of operation.
The casting forming the frame A of the machine is provided with suitable lugs, or projections, in which are slots J, to which the segment-plate B is firmly bolted, by the bolts and nuts jj.
This plate B is formed with a concentric groove, b, and a slot, 71.
A projection on the bottom of the rule-holder D fits and turns in this groove, for the purpose of keeping the holder D in proper position, with reference to the centre of the circle of which the plate B is a segment,
and a set-screw, 1, passes through the slot '5, and works in the holder D, for the purpose of holding the same on the plate at the required angle.
The head 0, which carries the knife G, slides in grooves a in the guides A.
These grooves are made wider than the SiLtGS c of the head 0, to allow a lateral movement to be given to it.
This head is operated by means of the lever F, pivoted to the swivel-bolt H, being connected therewith by the jaws f f, cast on the head, as plainly shown in the drawings.
A recess, K, fig. 3, isformed in the cutter-head below the knife, to allow the cuttings to be discharged therefrom.
This arrangement enables the operating-lever to be attached to the cutter-head, on a line with and immediately back of the knife, so that the power applied to it operates directly on the knife. I
The knife G projects through a slot in the head 0, and is held in place by the screw 9.
The rule-holder D is provided with an adjustable gauge, E.
The bed B is so arranged that it may be readily adjusted, with reference to the cutter Gr, so that the whole surface of the cutter may be readily used before it is necessary to remove the same to be ground.
Theoperation will be as follows: The holder being adjusted at the required angle, the rule to be mitrcd is placed in the machine, the end farthest from the knife resting against the adjustablestop E. The operator holding the rule in place with one-hand, gives motion to the lever F with the other.
The construction of the head carrying the knife, and of the lever operating the same, permits a lateral, as well as a vertical reciprocating motion to be given to the knife, so that the end of the rhle is gradually planed down by the operator, until the required surface is ob tained, the sides 0, of the cutter-head, at this time, being held firmly against the inner sides of the grooves a, as the final reciprocating movements are given, so that the end of the rule is finished with a smooth and perpendicular surface.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim- 1. The combination, with the segment-bed B and rule-holder D, of the reciprocating and vibrating head 0, the whole constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as described.
2. The mechanism for operating the cutter-head, consisting of the reciprocating and vibrating lever F, with its swivel-fulcrum H, and universal joint, ff, on the cutter-head, the whole constructed and operating substantially as described.
Making the segment-bed B adjustable laterally, in combination with a reciprocating vibrating cutter, so that by adjusting the bed, the whole width of the knife may be used, substantially as described.
Witnesses-z STEPHEN -D. TUCKER.
